Clark Library Covert Gallery: Call for Exhibit Proposals
The Clark Library invites students, faculty, and staff to submit proposals for the Dr. James T. Covert Gallery. Selected proposals will be exhibited during the 2020–21 academic year.
We welcome your art, whether painting, photography, or mixed media. If you have 9-10 pieces that you like, we will assist you with transforming them into an exhibit. Selected exhibitors also have the option to be included in the Library’s online collection, which can be found using this link.
New this year, we are also accepting proposals for curated exhibits related to the University’s history, using historical images and artifacts from the UP archives and museum. Staff will assist exhibitors with finding and selecting materials related to proposed topics.
Visit the Exhibits Information site for more details and proposal forms. Proposals are due Friday, March 27. Please send questions to covertgallery@up.edu.

TLC Tip of the Week: Meet With a Librarian
Could students in your classes use some extra assistance with finding good sources for their papers or presentations? Or maybe you would appreciate some literature searching leads for your own research project. Make an appointment using this link to meet with a librarian! Appointments are a great way for you or your students to get personalized and focused assistance with a research question. Librarians assist with questions about any aspect of the research process, including: defining a topic, choosing the best places to search, creating effective search strategies, narrowing searches, evaluating sources, accessing full text, and citing sources.
Use the online Make an Appointment system (linked from Get Help/Contact Us and many other library web pages) to see the availability of reference librarians. All the librarians assist with questions in any subject area, or use the blue “i” icon to identify and select a librarian who specializes in your discipline. Next, choose a date and time that works for you, and then fill out a brief form to tell us about your research question. After submitting the form, the appointment is automatically added to the librarian’s calendar, and both you and the librarian will receive an email confirmation.
For more information about the library’s meet with a librarian service, please contact Stephanie Michel (michel@up.edu, x7418). We hope to meet with you or your students soon!

There are also new workshops on Podcasting and Canva. Workshops run from January 28 to February 7 and are free and open to current students, faculty, and staff. Visit the Digital Lab’s site to see the detailed schedule and to register online.
Scheduling Library and Digital Lab Sessions for Spring 2020
The Clark Library offers instruction in two areas: information literacy and multimedia skills. Now is a great time to schedule us to meet with your classes before our calendar fills up. Librarians teach information literacy sessions and collaborate with faculty to make sure key concepts are covered. They also create course guides to support students in their academic research and projects. To schedule a class meeting, please email preferred dates and times to reference@up.edu.
The Digital Lab coordinator provides assistance with creating assignments and instructs classes that have multimedia projects such as creating videos, digital posters, and digital photography. Email José Velazco to arrange multimedia instruction through the Digital Lab.
Clark Library: Call for Spring Course Reserves
Get some of your spring semester prep out of the way! Library staff are ready to tackle spring course reserves. This is a popular library service that faculty can use to provide students with access to course readings. Library staff handle copyright screening and scan materials to meet accessibility standards. Students then use our course reserves system to see what is available for their courses. Faculty also have access and can get usage data for reserve items.
If you plan to reuse items that were previously on reserve, let us know and we can find that list in our archive. For new items, email a list of citations to library@up.edu or use the online form. Please include the course name, course number, instructor, and number of students enrolled in each section. Questions? Stop by the Service Desk, call x7111, or email library@up.edu.
Clark Library Project to Digitize The Beacon
The Oregon Heritage Commission has awarded a grant to the Clark Library to digitize one of the University’s most important and unique heritage resources: The Beacon. This student-run newspaper was published in print for over eight decades, from 1935 to 2016. The newspaper is a gold mine of information about the University’s history and culture, as well as a treasure trove of photos, biographical data, and articles covering major national and international events. This fifteen-month digitization project will begin in early December 2019 and will preserve the print editions of The Beacon in digital form for generations to come.
This project has been funded in part by the Oregon Heritage Commission, Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. For more information, contact Philip Vue, digital services, vue@up.edu. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for project updates @upclarklibrary.
Free Screening: “En Vida” by José Velazco, Nov. 20
A film highlighting Ecuadorian traditions and culture, produced by José Velazco, Clark Library, will be screened as part of International Education Week on Wednesday, November 20, at 5 p.m., in Franz Hall 120. Five years ago, Velazco found himself struggling to film his father’s funeral for his documentary. Having to separate the roles of a grieving son and director was the hardest challenge for Velazco. The documentary — “En Vida” — shows Velazco through his loss, ultimately bringing his family closer together and seeing the value in his Ecuadorian heritage as he navigates both his life in the U.S. and his roots in Ecuador. Velazco has been the digital lab coordinator at the University of Portland for six years and looks forward to sharing his personal story with the UP community.
For more information contact Velazco at velazco@up.edu.
