Clark Library: New Multimedia Guide

Want to learn more about graphic design, photography, film, or audio? The Clark Library’s Digital Lab has a new guide for anyone interested in creating and using multimedia. The Multimedia guide provides a wealth of information including self-paced online courses and eBooks, as well as links to image collections and professional organizations for each discipline. Digital Lab: Fall Workshops

Those who would like to start their academic year with some new skills are encouraged to sign up for the Clark Library’s introductory workshops on Graphic Design, iMovie, GarageBand, Audacity, and Canva. Workshops will be offered through Zoom and run from September 14 through September 26. Fall 2020: Setting Up Course Reserves and Library Instruction

Electronic course reserves can be made available through the Clark Library’s system which provides students with quick and direct access. For Fall 2020, only online resources will be provided (eBooks, streaming videos, online articles), as well as items that can be scanned and added (journal articles, chapters from books). To set up reserves for your class, use the Course Reserves Request Form or email a list of citations, along with the course name, course number, and number of students, to library@up.edu.
Librarians and the Digital Lab Coordinator are available to meet with your classes online, or through asynchronous videos, to cover information literacy and multimedia topics. Now is a great time to schedule us before our calendar fills up by emailing: reference@up.edu (information literacy) or velazco@up.edu (multimedia).

Librarians teach information literacy sessions and collaborate with faculty to make sure key concepts are covered. They also create course guides to support students in their academic research and projects. To schedule a class meeting, please email preferred dates and times to reference@up.edu.

Clark Library Digital Lab: Fall Workshops

Here’s a good opportunity to take a little time to develop your multimedia skills. The Clark Library’s Digital Lab is offering a variety of introductory workshops in mid-September. These are free and open to current students, faculty, and staff. Topics include PowerPoint 101, iMovie/Video Editing, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Canva/Graphic Design, Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects/Digital Animation, and 3D Printing.

TLC Tip of the Week: Virtual Reality in the Classroom

March 16, 2018

Virtual reality is an emerging technology that allows students to create and learn in immersive environments. According to the American Library Association, this trend will grow in the near future as multimedia producers seek to create more engaging modes of visual storytelling. The Digital Lab currently offers a variety of titles including:

  • Google Earth VR
  • The Stanford Ocean Acidification Experience
  • The VR Museum of Fine Art

Ending one year leads to planning for the next! Now is a great time to schedule library instruction before the calendar fills up. The Clark Library offers instruction in two areas: information literacy and multimedia skills.

For information literacy, librarians collaborate with faculty to tailor sessions to students’ research needs. The Digital Lab coordinator provides assistance with creating assignments and instructs classes that have multimedia projects such as creating videos, digital posters, digital photography, and websites.

To request an information literacy session for your class, please email preferred dates and times to Heidi Senior at senior@up.edu. To arrange multimedia instruction, please email José Velazco at velazco@up.edu.

TLC Teaching Tip of the Week: Digital Tools in the Classroom

The Digital Lab welcomes faculty looking to increase their students’ multimedia skills to arrange a consultation with the lab’s coordinator (and TLC member) José Velazco, velazco@up.edu. Recent collaborative student projects include:

  • Interactive Digital Presentations: Apple’s iBooks Author (or Adobe’s InDesign) allow students to create and send interactive presentations complete with photographs, audio and video. Class members studying political science recently used iBooks Author to present statistics and narratives related to international issues.
  • Digital Posters: Students can use Piktochart, an online poster design software, to create posters. Class participants have used the software to create infographics related to a variety of topics across disciplines
  • The Lab also offers workshops regarding multimedia best practices. This semester’s topics include Photoshop, Illustrator and Creating Electronic Music. Click here to register for a session.

Faculty are welcome to visit the Digital Lab (located on the upper floor of the library) or contact José Velazco, digital initiatives coordinator, at velazco@up.edu for a consultation and learn how to integrate these technologies into the classroom.

Anita Gooding, social work, was selected as a 2020-2021 Field Research Scholar by the Transforming Field Education Landscape (TFEL) program at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. Scholars attend regular seminars and present their own research related to strengthening field education in social work.

Aziz Inan, Shiley School of Engineering. recently shared some of his work on palindrome dates with the staff of Farmers’ Almanac which lead to an articled titled “2021: A Special Year For Palindrome Dates, Starting This Month!” See the article using this link.

Bob Butler, professor emeritus of environmental studies; Jenda Johnson, Earth Sciences Animated; and Nic Zentner, Central Washington University, published an animation titled “Ghost Forests: Evidence for a Giant Earthquake & Tsunami in the Pacific Northwest.” This animation explores how Native American oral history, geology of ghost forests in coastal Washington and Oregon, and written accounts of a tsunami that flooded Japanese Pacific Coast villages converge to document the most recent Cascadia subduction zone megathrust earthquake on January 26, 1700 at about 9 p.m. The Ghost Forest animation can be found on the IRIS website at: https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/animation/740 or on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xPbt8iiDRo&feature=youtu.be.
