How To Prepare For Flu Season? Get Your Shot!
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends yearly influenza vaccination and the University Health and Counseling Center encourages all campus community members to follow that recommendation. The timing of flu season is unpredictable and can vary from season to season. Flu activity most commonly peaks in the U.S. between December and February. However, seasonal flu activity can begin as early as October and continue to occur as late as May. The CDC recommends that people get vaccinated against the flu soon after vaccine becomes available, preferably by October. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against the flu, so the time is now.
The Health and Counseling Center has partnered with Walmart Pharmacy this year for flu vaccinations. Walmart will be on campus Thursday, October 13, from 5 to 9 p.m., in Mehling Ballroom and Saturday, November 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Mehling Ballroom. Please bring your health insurance card, as most insurance plans will cover the cost. Help join us in keeping our University community healthy.

Annual Red Mass, Sept. 28: All are Invited
All members of the campus community are invited to attend the annual Red Mass on Wednesday, September 28, at 5:30 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. Red is a traditional color associated with the Holy Spirit, and the Red Mass is celebrated each fall to honor and invoke the gifts of the Holy Spirit on all those associated with the practice and administration of law, a custom dating back to the Middle Ages. The first Red Mass in the U.S. was celebrated in 1859.
Archbishop Alexander K. Sample (pictured) will be the principal celebrant and Fr. James Gallagher, C.S.C., Campus Ministry, will offer the homily.
The Red Mass is an ancient tradition in the Catholic Church, going back to medieval times, wherein the Holy Spirit is invoked at the beginning of the legal season to guide all those administer the law. The red vestments worn by the priests symbolize the Holy Spirit who descended on the Apostles in the form of tongues of fire on Pentecost and whose wisdom is implored to guide the Church and the Nation.

Learn more about work already taking place on campus to increase international and intercultural teaching and learning. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from colleagues who are integrating the GILOs into their courses here on campus and for study abroad.

Beauchamp Center Named as 2016 Facility of Merit
The Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center has been named as a 2016 Facility of Merit award winner by Athletic Business, an online publication billed as “the resource for athletic, fitness, and recreation professionals.” The Beauchamp Center was the first of 10 facilities to be awarded around the country.
The announcement reads in part: “Designed to be a ‘game-changer’ for the University of Portland campus community, the Beauchamp Center drew responses such as ‘stunning,’ ‘beautiful,’ ‘thoughtful,’ and ‘sophisticated’ from judges. The building’s generous use of glazing reveals major activity spaces, arranged as fitness neighborhoods to make the center feel more intimate and approachable. Materials selection reflects the existing campus context, while helping establish the building’s own identity as the new heart of campus. Said one judge, ‘This project is beautifully and consistently detailed on both the exterior and the interior.’”
All winning facilities will be featured in the Athletic Business October issue and at the 2016 Athletic Business Show in Orlando, Florida. The winners will be honored with a video presentation at the Athletic Business keynote with Don Yaeger on Friday, November 18, at 11:15 a.m., followed by an awards reception from 6 to 8 p.m.
The Beauchamp Center was designed by Soderstrom Architects in Portland and HOK in Kansas City, Mo. It boasts 73,000 square feet with gymnasiums, exercise studios, suspended track, climbing wall, outdoor pursuits center, functional training area, and more.
