Faculty, Staff Invited To Reunion Weekend, June 26-28

UPReunionSlideshow_JQuigley82-XLFaculty and staff members are encouraged to join the hundreds of alumni who return to campus to participate in the annual Alumni Reunion. Registration is available online, and those who would like to attend are asked to fill out the form by Friday, June 19. Reunion will take place on campus June 26-28. The faculty/staff registration form is available at http://bit.ly/r15facstaff (this link will pre-fill the discount code). Most events are free for faculty and staff and their families, as indicated on the registration form.

The following events are not free and require payment: Alumni Golf Tournament, and the Columbia Gorge Fruit Loop bus tour. To register for these paid events, please contact the alumni office directly.

Reunion is the largest alumni event of the year, annually drawing more than a thousand alumni, faculty, staff, and friends to campus for a weekend of reconnection and reminiscing. This year, Reunion celebrate the 50th anniversary of Mehling Hall, the 80th birthday of the School of Nursing, the Entrepreneur Scholars program, the Cross Country program, the milestone classes of 1965 and 1990, and all classes ending in 0 and 5.

Friday’s National Alumni Board Golf Tournament kicks off the weekend, along with a bus tour, the Purple Flamingo welcoming reception, and the Mehling Alumnae Rooftop Soiree. Saturday features the Old Stomping Grounds 5K run, the return of Alumni College session classes (hosted by Brian Doyle, Fr. Charlie Gordon, Stephanie Salomone, Gary Malecha, and Brad Franco), the 50 Year Club Mass and Lunch, a men’s basketball alumni game, River Campus and Beauchamp Center tours, receptions for the classes observing quinquennial anniversaries, and the signature event of the weekend, the Welcome Home BBQ and Dance. The weekend concludes on Sunday with the All-Alumni Mass and Brunch.

Texas Instruments Leadership Summit, May 29

dede1a copyThe provost’s office, School of Education, mathematics department, and Shiley School of Engineering invite faculty to attend a free conference on campus, the Texas Instruments Leadership Summit: College and Career Readiness in STEM Education, on Friday, May 29, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons boardroom. While the summit is oriented towards pre-college, faculty members can easily transfer information to the college level, and may be able to better understand the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) preparation that incoming students bring with them.

Keynote speaker will be Chris Dede (pictured), Timothy E. Wirth Professor in Learning Technologies at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education. Breakfast and lunch will be provided during this half day summit and there is an outstanding speaker line up with both national and local perspectives. Space is limited so please register soon if you plan to attend.

Fiscal Year Dates, Reminders

ungern copyThe University’s fiscal year ends on Tuesday, June 30, and there are some important dates and reminders to note:

  • Expenses submitted prior to June 30 which are for travel or events occurring in fiscal year 2016 will be accrued, and paid against the fiscal year 2016 budget.
  • Reimbursement and Payment Request forms to be paid against the fiscal year 2015 budget need to be submitted to the controller’s office no later than Friday July 10.
  • All goods and services purchased must be received by June 30. Any deliveries received after June 30th will be charged to the fiscal year 2016 budget.

An Open Invitation

prezrendaUniversity president Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C., invites the University community to nominate candidates for the University’s annual presentation of honorary doctorates (pictured: 2015 honorary doctorate recipient Larree Renda). Such men and women have in a remarkable way encapsulated the University’s dedication to teaching and learning, faith and formation, and service and leadership in the classroom, residence halls, and the world, and are notable in their professions and/or communities for dedication, commitment, creativity, service, and the manner in which they have turned their talents to the common good.

Nominations should be sent to Tom Greene, provost, at greene@up.edu, preferably by the end of June. Names should be accompanied by a short explanation of the candidate’s life and work.

Chapel Renovations Complete

Chapel renovations.jpgA third phase of renovations has been completed inside the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. The most recent renovations included replacing the movable seating with pews, replacing the chairs for concelebrants and the choir, and installing lattice woodwork to the altar backdrop wall that will match the color of the pews, according to Campus Ministry.

Two other phases of renovations have occurred in the Chapel in the last three years. New flooring, designed to match the original flooring, was added in early 2013. Other renovations have included a new marble altar, a new wooden ambo, a redesigned presider chair, and a new altar backdrop wall.

The Chapel of Christ the Teacher, which opened in 1986, was designed by renowned Portland architect Pietro Belluschi. His goal was to design a worship space in a Northwest regional style with Scandinavian and Japanese overtones in a building that emphasized interiority over exteriority.

Next UP Hive Event: May 20

HivenewThe next UP Hive Network event in partnership with the Dundon-Berchtold Institute, “Let’s Get Down to Business,” will take place on Wednesday, May 20, at 5:30 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons board room. Explore behavioral ethics in business with a thought- provoking panel of leaders:

  • Mark B. Ganz, UP regent and president and CEO of Cambia Health Solutions. Since taking the top post in 2003, he has guided the company along a path of re-imagining and reshaping the health care system to one that is accountable to individuals and families.
  • Danielle Hermanny, general counsel and special assistant to the president at the University of Portland. She advises UP on legal matters, generates policy, and completes special projects for the University president Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C.
  • Naveen Gudigantala, business professor and Dundon-Berchtold Fellow at the University of Portland. A past recipient of “The Difference Award” as nominated by UP’s student-athletes, Gudigantala was named a Dundon-Berchtold Fellow during the 2014-2015 academic year; he completed a year-long research project in ethics with UP senior Marcie Abreu. Their project is titled, “An Examination of Ethical Issues in Gray Markets Involving Information Technology (IT) Products.”

Students Awarded Teaching Assistantships in France

booth copyThree French studies students (Britta Geisler, Rubama Nasir, and Julia Maynard) have been granted teaching assistantships in France, according to Trudie Booth, international languages and cultures. The assistantships are sponsored by the French Ministry of Education and the Cultural Services office of the French Embassy and give eligible French majors the opportunity to teach English in French elementary and high schools.
