Humanities Collaborative Luncheon, Nov. 22: All Welcome!

November 15, 2019

Matthew WarshawskiThe next Humanities Collaborative luncheon will take place on Friday, November 22, noon to 1:30 p.m., in the Teske dining room. Lunch will be provided courtesy of the CAS dean’s office.

The featured presenter will be Matthew Warshawsky, international languages and cultures, who will discuss “Making the Baroque Less Baroque: Helping Students Understand Texts from Long Ago and Far Away.” This conversation invites you to share strategies for engaging students with texts that at first glance they might consider unrelated to their own experiences, but that in fact have a surprising and important relevance. The frame through which Warshawsky approaches that challenge is literary and artistic production in Spain during the Medieval through Baroque eras, asking students to consider questions of right and wrong, idealized love, gender roles, religious (in)tolerance, and what makes a “good” and even holy life. Participants will consider translations of two poems that students read as a way of approaching some of these issues: “The Dark Night,” by San Juan de la Cruz, and “She Argues to be Inconsistent the Desires and the Criticisms of Men, Who in Women Find Culpable That Which They Themselves Cause,” by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.

Space is limited, so please RSVP to Andrea Egger, egger@up.edu, as soon as possible. Also contact Laura McLary with questions at mclary@up.edu.

“Spanish for Science and Engineering in the United States,” March 12

March 8, 2019

Oscar A. Pérez of Skidmore College will present “Spanish for Science and Engineering in the United States: Past, Present, Future” on Tuesday, March 12, at 5 p.m., in Franz Hall room 120. His talk is sponsored by international languages and cultures and the Shiley School of Engineering.

Why should scientists and engineers in the United States learn a language other than English? What kind of benefits would they get from investing the significant amount of time required to be proficient in another language? In his talk, Pérez will seek some answers, first, by exploring the long, although sometimes hidden, tradition of Spanish-language learning in scientific and technological contexts. Then, he will discuss current efforts in the United States to promote the teaching of Spanish for STEM, including some pedagogical models that have been proven useful, and some possibilities to facilitate the proliferation of Spanish for science and technology course offerings within language departments or in conjunction with science and engineering programs at institutions of higher education.

The lecture is free and open to all. For more information contact Maria Echenique, international languages and cultures, at echeniqu@up.edu.

“Prom Night 2018,” April 18: All Welcome!

April 13, 2018

Students will perform original comedies in Spanish, which they have adapted from four classic plays dating 1806-1933, on Wednesday, April 18, 5-6 p.m., in Mago Hunt Center, according to Lora Looney, international languages and cultures. All are welcome to attend. As part of the class Nation & Identity in Spanish Theater, students scripted one-act plays around the theme of “Prom Night 2018” with visiting playwright Emilio Williams, to poke fun at literary icons like Don Juan and the Maiden. Paradigms that students gently mock include triangulation and male honor, marrying for money, seduction at any cost, as well as rigid constructs of female identity. A final course assignment, this performance is funded by the Beckman Humor Project.

For more information contact Looney at looney@up.edu.

“Tales from the Vienna Woods,” Dec. 10

December 2, 2016

comedydramaLaura McLary and her German 408 students invite all faculty, staff, and students to attend a performance of Ödön von Horváth’s Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald (Tales from the Vienna Woods), on Saturday, December 10, at 7 p.m., in the Blair Studio in Mehling Hall. The performance is free and open to all.

Written in 1931, von Horváth’s play comes from the tradition of the Volksstück, a play for the common people that ends with a moral. As you watch von Horváth’s modern take on the Volksstück, observe how the play comes to terms with the role of the individual in the family and in male-female relationships and identifies the sources of social pressures and hypocrisy. What is the moral of this tale from the Vienna Woods? The play will be presented completely in German.
