A representative from TIAA, which administers the University’s retirement accounts, will be on campus on April 11-13, according to Laura Barnard, human resources. Financial counseling appointments are available during work hours on those days in Oricco Hall, but appointments must be scheduled at www.tiaa-cref.org/schedulenow or by calling call TIAA at 877.842.2028 (press 5 to schedule an appointment).

All Hands On Deck was launched on Monday, April 3. It’s the University’s first annual campus campaign, combining student philanthropy, faculty and staff giving, and parent giving. The campaign will run until May 7 with the goal of reaching 1000 donors before graduation.
By uniting the efforts of charitable giving from those closest to UP, we can send a powerful message to the more than 7,500 donors who support UP each year— that those closest to UP believe UP is worth supporting and that UP is our home and giving starts here. During this inaugural spring campaign:

The University of Portland Jazz Festival will take place in the Chiles Center on Wednesday, April 12 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and Thursday, April 13 (8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.). Performance and free and open to all.
The UP Jazz Festival showcases excellent student musicians as well as guest artists from around the nation, all contributing to a vibrant festival of jazz and the celebration of music performance and education on our campus. Since it began in 1964, the festival has grown in size every year, becoming known as a premier student jazz event in the Pacific Northwest. This event will also feature a performance by the UP Jazz Ensemble with guest soloist Alex Noppe.

Give yourself the gift of quiet meditation during Holy Week through Visio Divina, contemplative prayer focusing on one of the stunning illuminations from The Saint John’s Bible. Join with members of the community on Wednesday, April 12, from 12:35-1:15 p.m. (immediately following noon Mass) in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. The event is co-sponsored by Campus Ministry and the Garaventa Center.

SOPHIA, the task force for supporting senior faculty, is hosting an information session for any faculty or administrator interested in short- and long-term Fulbright opportunities on Monday, April 10, 3:15-4:30 p.m., in Franz Hall’s Murphy Room. Representatives from the Fulbright Foundation will be present to give a brief overview and answer individuals’ questions.

The University’s annual Founders’ Day celebration will take place on Tuesday, April 11. Four sessions of student presentations will be held in place of regularly scheduled classes, and all students and faculty are encouraged take part in the day’s events, featuring senior presentations, undergraduate research, panel discussions, recitals, and more. Classes scheduled to begin after 4 p.m. will be held as usual.
Founders’ Day was first celebrated at the University in 1902, when University founder Most Rev. Alexander Christie visited the school he had established on The Bluff the summer before. For more information, including a schedule of the day’s events, go to https://www1.up.edu/foundersday/.
Before the Learning Commons initiated tutor training across its programs, peer assistants commonly did more explaining and less asking.
