State of UP Address, Feb. 27: Reserve By Feb. 19

February 16, 2018

All University community members are welcome to join University president Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C., as he presents the 2018 State of the University address on Tuesday, February 27, at the Sentinel Hotel in downtown Portland. He will share his vision on how our work shapes lives on and beyond The Bluff. Kathy Perko ’84 will also speak about how UP helped form her into the person she has become and how the lessons she learned while at UP have guided and helped her in the healthcare profession. Kathy won our Oddo Service Alumni Award in 2008.

Doors open at 11:15 a.m., and the program will run from noon to 1 p.m. Cost is $20 per person and $160 for a table of eight. Please register online at giving.up.edu/stateofup by Monday, February 19. The program will take place on the fourth floor; the Sentinel Hotel is located at 614 SW 11th Ave.

TLC From The TLC: Faculty-Led Abroad Experiences & Planning for Accessibility

Participation in faculty-led study abroad courses, programs and experiences provides outstanding ways for UP students to deepen their understanding of discipline-specific content in an international context.  Are you thinking of creating a faculty-led study abroad program or course (or have you already created one)?  It is important to plan for accessibility while creating your course or program. Melanie Gangle, program manager for Accessible Education Services (AES), is glad to consult with you in partnership with Eddie Contreras, director of studies abroad, in order to design a faculty-led abroad experience to be as inclusive as possible, and accessible for students with many different types of disabilities. STEM Innovation Fellows Wanted: Apply by Feb. 25

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Improving Undergraduate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education team is asking for applications for STEM Innovation Fellows to participate in the 2017 institute, according to Stephanie Salomone, mathematics. Those interested need to apply at this link by Sunday, February 25, 2018. The UP team will develop new, evidence-based methods for teaching classes, and will engage in reflective teaching and peer observation to improve pedagogy.

Pilots Baseball is Back! Tickets On Sale Now

Pilots baseball is back on The Bluff this week! Join us on Wednesday to see the first pitch of the season as the Pilots take on Oregon. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m. Come back again on Friday to watch the first of the Pilots’ three-game series versus Saint Joseph’s. Both games on Friday and Saturday will start at 3 p.m. Support the Pilots for their final match versus Saint Joseph’s on Sunday beginning at noon.

Student-Athletes Choose 2018 Difference Award Faculty Winners

The athletics department would like to acknowledge this year’s winners of the Difference Award. Each year, student-athletes nominate professors who they feel have made a difference in their lives. The definition is left intentionally vague, allowing students to reflect on the many ways a professor may have made a difference to them. This year, four professors were selected as winners:

  • Sheri Rooks, communication studies
  • Beth Morton, chemistry
  • Bonnie Robb, School of Education
  • Bill Barnes, economics.

“Women of the Book: A Concert with Words,” Feb. 22

February 16, 2018

All are invited to enjoy world premieres of sacred art songs inspired by the feisty, faithful women of the Bible on Thursday, February 22, at 7:30 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. “Women of the Book: A Concert with Words” is free and open to all; a reception with artists and composers will follow. The concert features artists Nicole Leupp Hanig, soprano, Cantor Ida Rae Cahana, soprano, Maureen Briare, soprano, Catherine Jacobs, soprano, and Susan McDaniel, piano, performing works by composers Cynthia Gerdes and Michael Connolly as well as traditional pieces and poetry inspired by The Saint John’s Bible.

Final ReadUP Discussion Group, Feb. 22

All UP faculty, staff and students are invited to discuss this year’s ReadUP selection, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, in a final discussion group facilitated by Fr. Charlie Gordon, C.S.C., on Thursday, February 22, from noon to 1 p.m., in the Library Conference Room. Philosophy professor Thompson Faller, beloved retired member of our UP community, will join the conversation to add his knowledge of medical ethics. Light refreshments will be served; participants are encouraged to bring their lunch if desired. Announcing New Ignite Grants for Faculty Innovation in Teaching & Learning

The Office of the Provost is pleased to announce the Ignite Grants for Faculty Innovation in Teaching and Learning. With up to $5,000 per grant, Ignite will support new ideas and approaches for course, curriculum, and program development that make an innovative contribution to UP’s teaching and learning future. Proposals will also advance Vision 2020 and support deans’ strategies and priorities. Ideas that test student imagination and creative problem solving skills in their respective disciplines are especially encouraged, as are proposals that strengthen collaboration with other units on campus.

These grants will be awarded to full-time faculty who have the support of their deans. Faculty are encouraged to collaborate with other campus professionals (full-time or part-time) and may also work with students in the planning and implementation of projects. Proposals are due on Friday, March 30.
