The men’s soccer season continues with two big home games this weekend at Merlo Field. The first game is on Friday night at 7 p.m., as the Pilots take on the Buckeyes from Ohio State University. Game two will be on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., versus San Jose State. Sunday’s game features the Latino Heritage Kickoff event celebrating the start of Hispanic Heritage month and paying homage to eight Pilots of Latino descent. Come out and enjoy food, music, and much more starting at 12:30 p.m. in the Chiles Center Plaza.

Portland Pilots head volleyball coach Brent Crouch led the USA Volleyball Collegiate National Team to a gold medal last week at the U22 Global Challenge, held in Pula, Croatia. They defeated China in the finals to claim the 12th annual European Global Challenge Championship. The team also defeated England and Slovenia on the way to the title. The Global Challenge began in Salt Lake City, Utah, as a modest volleyball tournament with a few foreign teams. Today, it has grown to a 32-team international invitational featuring top teams in u17 and u22 divisions from around the world.
The Pilot women’s soccer team opens the 2016-2017 season at home against the Washington Huskies on Friday, August 19. The men’s team will make their 2016 debut at Merlo Field on Friday, August 26 against Wright State. Now is the time to get season tickets for the upcoming men’s and women’s soccer seasons. Recent University of Portland graduate Riley Clark ’16 won a Northwest Emmy Award for his video, “University of Portland Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Raises Money for St. Baldrick’s Foundation,” on Saturday, June 4, as announced by the Northwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. His video, produced through Portland Sports Network (PSN), won in the category of “ News: General Assignment-Serious” in the College Student Awards for Excellence division.
Three Portland Pilots earned All-American honors and one received Honorable Mention for their performances during the 2016 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field season as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Recreational services is selling Schwinn indoor cycling bikes and Concept 2 rowers from Howard Hall. The items will cost $100-150 each depending on the model and age, are in working order, and will be sold “as-is.” Also available are select cardio machines that are on the first floor in Howard Hall; they will be priced separately. Four members of the Portland Pilots men’s and women’s track and field team qualified recently for the NCAA National Championship. Woody Kincaid, Reid Buchanan, Lauren LaRocco, and Kaylie Van Loo each took top-10 finishes in their respective events at Rock Chalk Park during the NCAA West Regional competition. For the second straight year, the Pilots match a program record by sending four qualifiers to nationals. Portland also sent four student-athletes to the NCAA Track and Field Championships in 1995.
The Timbers 2 soccer club will continue to play their home matches at Merlo Field over the summer and the athletics office hopes faculty and staff can make some time to catch all of the soccer action happening on the UP campus. It’ s an exciting time in the athletics department with new head coaches taking the reins for the Pilot men’s basketball and men’s soccer programs, and they want the University community to be a part of this new era. Tickets for the 2016-2017 seasons are now available for all faculty and staff at a discount of 50 percent off.
The 19th Annual UP Day at Joe Etzel Field is scheduled for a doubleheader on Friday, May 20, when the Pilots take on Saint Mary’s. The first game is set for 2 p.m. All employees and family members are welcome to attend the game at no charge and also enjoy complimentary hot dogs (vegetarian alternatives will be available as well), chips, and soda courtesy of Bon Appetit. There will also be prizes raffled off every half-inning, so come out and cheer the Pilots on to victory. Department heads and office directors are encouraged to allow as many employees to attend the game as possible.
