Fall Course Packs Due July 11

July 8, 2016

course packsAll faculty and instructors must turn in their course pack materials for fall semester to the printing services office by Monday, July 11, according to Mary Scroggins, printing services. The lead time is needed so printing services staff can obtain copyright permissions and organize the packs for production before the start of the fall 2016 semester. Some copyright requests take up to six weeks to obtain—please keep this in mind so staff are better able to serve everyone’s needs prior to the start of school.

For more information contact Kassie Hansen at x8101 or hansenk@up.edu.

UP Track and Field Athletes To Compete at Nationals

June 3, 2016

trackDTFour members of the Portland Pilots men’s and women’s track and field team qualified recently for the NCAA National Championship. Woody Kincaid, Reid Buchanan, Lauren LaRocco, and Kaylie Van Loo each took top-10 finishes in their respective events at Rock Chalk Park during the NCAA West Regional competition. For the second straight year, the Pilots match a program record by sending four qualifiers to nationals. Portland also sent four student-athletes to the NCAA Track and Field Championships in 1995.

Kincaid was the top finisher for a second year in a row in the men’s 5,000m with a time of 14:09.13. Buchanan was one of four members of the men’s team to compete in the men’s 10,000m race. He was the top Pilot to finish, taking seventh with a time of 29:53.54. LaRocco first competed in the women’s 10,000m, placing sixth with a time of 34:25.40. LaRocco also qualified for nationals in the 5,000 meters as her time of 16:21.09 was good enough for ninth place. Van Loo’s throw of 167’8’’ in the javelin held off nine of the last 16 throwers, placing her in seventh overall. She will be one of the 24 student-athletes competing for a national championship in Eugene.

The four qualifying Pilots will be competing in the NCAA National Championship on June 8-11 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. For more information contact the athletics office at x7117 or go to portlandpilots.com.

From Our Past: Christie Hall Groundbreaking

June 3, 2016

christiehallJune 8, 1911 saw the groundbreaking for Christie Hall, at a ceremony attended by Portland archbishop Alexander Christie, the building’s namesake, who turned the first spadeful of earth himself.

When the property on which the University stands was purchased in 1901 from the University Land Company, the terms called for the construction of “a major building” within ten years. The Columbia Colosseum athletic fieldhouse was built in 1903, but Christie Hall is the second-oldest building on campus, since the Colosseum collapsed during a storm in 1927.

The school catalogue described Christie as “a model school dormitory,” designed in Tudor-style brick with three floors and a full basement, with 122 private rooms. “Each room was lighted, ventilated, heated by steam, and contained a washbasin with hot and cold running water,” according to Jim Covert’s A Point of Pride. The University library was moved from West Hall to the Christie basement that year; the “temporary” basis of that move lasted until the Clark Library was built in 1958. The basement also included two bowling alleys, a billiard room, and a smoking room. Christie Hall’s chapel was located where it is today, and has served for over 100 years as a refuge for quiet prayer and reflection.

Christie Hall has served a number of functions over the decades. Many of the legendary Holy Cross priests and brothers made their homes there, including Frs. John and Con Hooyboer, Fr. John Delaunay, and many others whose open-door policies led many students to seek their counsel at all hours. Faculty members kept offices in Christie Hall rooms, especially before the construction of Buckley Center in the early 1970s, and Christie was also home to the University’s credit union, administered faithfully and meticulously by business professor Russell Braden and his wife Kay until the early 1980s.
