Tuition Remission Application Deadline: July 1

please_noteFaculty and staff applications for tuition remission for Fall 2016 are due by Wednesday, July 1. Forms can be accessed through the human resources website at www.up.edu/hr/. Since deadlines need to match those in student accounts, employees are ask to please keep the following dates in mind:

  • Fall term: July 1;
  • Spring term: November 15;
  • Summer term: April 5.

Please note that there are separate tuition remission application forms for undergraduate and graduate course work, and that any graduate level tuition remission benefits will be taxable to the employee on the value above $5,250 for attempted credits and subject to applicable withholdings, and will be reflected on the W-2 form of the tax year the remission was applied. Salary Requirement Changes For Exempt Employment Positions

chungOn May 18, 2016, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) announced changes to the minimum salary requirement for exempt positions. According to DOL, staff positions that are paid less than $913 per week (or $47,476 per year) cannot be designated as exempt. This change is effective December 1, 2016, and will affect exempt staff positions at UP that do not meet this requirement.

The human resources office is working with University leaders to ensure that we comply with this change by the effective date. After gathering more information, HR will contact affected departments and employees.

In the meantime, persons who have questions should contact HR director Sandy Chung at chung@up.edu or x8987.

Parents Night Out, June 3

stressed-out copyUniversity parents are invited to take the opportunity to enjoy four hours of free time with their significant others while the UP onsite daycare watches their children on Parents Night Out, Friday, June 3, from 6-10 p.m. This service is provided by Vermont Hills Family Life Center daycare/ preschool. The cost is $30 per child and $40 for families (two or more) and includes dinner for the kids. All UP faculty and staff members can take advantage of this service, not just those whose kids are enrolled in daycare.

Season Tickets Now Available

Submit Scholarly Activities Now

Faculty are encouraged to submit their scholarly activities since June 2015 to the scholarly activity portal on PilotsUP. The data entered will be used by faculty for their annual self-evaluation and will populate A Community of Scholars as well as the Clark Library’s UP authors celebration. The portal closes on June 2, 2016, so please enter data before that date.

Third Friday Supervisor Workshops, Session 3: June 17

jenkinsbill copyEvery third Friday of the month, human resources director Sandy Chung and assistant director Bill Jenkins will hold workshops for supervisors from 10-11 a.m. in the Waldschmidt fifth floor conference room. The Third Friday Workshop scheduled for June 17 is about performance management, including how to give constructive feedback, do verbal and written warnings, and conduct performance improvement plans.

New Hire In Alumni Relations: Sara Haley Grzelka

Willamette Boulevard Closure, Now through Early Fall

road closed DTThe Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is closing Willamette Boulevard to northbound traffic from May 23 through early Fall 2016, in order to build a retaining wall between Chase and Washburne avenues. The westbound/northbound lane carrying traffic toward the University will be closed to all motorized vehicle traffic all hours and all days during the project duration. A detour along Lombard will be in effect for re-routed traffic. Southbound/eastbound traffic on Willamette will be maintained and will remain unchanged during the project. Local access to residents near the project will be provided at all times. Pedestrian and bicycle traffic will be allowed to use the sidewalks on the north side of Willamette during the course of construction. The southbound/eastbound bicycle lane will remain open, even during the partial road closure.

Mock’s Crest Productions Presents “Ruddigore,” June 4-26

ruddigoreMock’s Crest Productions will present Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta Ruddigore in Mago Hunt Center Theater on June 4-5, 10-12, 17-19, and 23-26. Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday – Saturday and 2 p.m. Sundays. Dinner and brunch will be served on the lawn in front of the Hunt Center prior to show times. Tickets are available at Mago Hunt Box Office and can be ordered by phone at x7287 or online at magohuntboxoffice@up.edu.

Ruddigore is the classic Gilbert and Sullivan “Ghost” operetta. It follows the trials of Robin Oakapple, who fled Ruddigore to avoid inheriting its title and curse, which requires that the Baron must commit a crime every day or spend his nights in agony being tortured by the ghosts of his ancestors.

Mock’s Crest is a semi-professional company devoted to a yearly summer production of comic light opera, primarily the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan. It combines professional singers and musicians with students, faculty, and staff in the Department of Performing and Fine Arts at the University of Portland. The production company was originally created under the guidance of the late Roger O. Doyle in 1990 with support of theater faculty as his production team.

Fiscal Year Dates, Reminders

moneybagThe University’s fiscal year ends on Thursday, June 30, and there are some important dates and reminders to note:

  • Expenses submitted prior to June 30 which are for travel or events occurring in fiscal year 2017 will be accrued, and paid against the fiscal year 2017 budget.
  • Reimbursement and Payment Request forms to be paid against the fiscal year 2016 budget need to be submitted to the Controller’s Office no later than Friday, July 15.
  • All goods and services purchased must be received by June 30. Any deliveries received after June 30 will be charged to the fiscal year 2017 budget.

Founded by Fr. Richard Berg, C.S.C.
