The Committee on Teaching and Scholarship is soliciting proposals from faculty and staff to host workshops, roundtables, and presentations during Faculty Development Day, to be held on Tuesday, May 7, according to Aziz Inan, committee chair. Faculty Sharing Their Work
The winners of two prestigious University of Portland faculty awards are scheduled to present their work on Friday, April 5, from 3 to 4 p.m., in Franz Hall Room 034. Outstanding Teaching Award winner Laura McLary, international languages and cultures, will present “Communities, Cultures, Connections: Making Second-Language Learning Relevant,” followed by Outstanding Scholarship Award winner Lauretta Frederking, political science, who will present “Exclusion and Inclusion of Muslim Americans after September 11, 2001: From Religious Identity to Political Interests.” Light snacks will be served. Margaret Hogan Lecture
University of Portland professor emerita Margaret Monahan Hogan will present a lecture, “Resistance: Its Costs and Its Limits,” on Wednesday, April 3, at 7 p.m., in Buckley Center room 163. Her talk is free and open to faculty, staff, students, and the public. Hogan’s presentation will provide a framework to consider the costs and limits of resistance. Her lecture will include Thomas Aquinas’ teachings on obedience; examples of resistance in recent history including the Kreisau Circle and its opposition to the Nazi Party during World War II; and present day religious liberty. Founders Day, Tuesday April 9
The University’s annual Founders Day celebration will take place on Tuesday, April 9. Four sessions of student presentations will be held in place of regularly scheduled classes, and all students and faculty are encouraged take part in the day’s events, featuring senior presentations, panel discussions, recitals, and more. Classes scheduled to begin after 4 p.m. will be held as usual. Founders Day was first celebrated at the University in 1902, when University founder Most Rev. Speech/Debate Nationals
The University of Portland Speech and Debate Union sent four representatives to the Pi Kappa Delta National Speech and Debate Tournament in St. Louis, MO over spring break. Congratulations to sophomore Katie Wilson, who competed against debaters from 89 schools across the country and finished the tournament as a quarterfinalist (top 8 in the nation) and was deemed to be among the top 10 percent of all debate speakers in the nation. Spring 2013 Butine Awards
The Committee on Teaching and Scholarship (TAS) has determined the award recipients of the 2012-2013 Butine Faculty Development Fund spring cycle, according to committee chair Aziz Inan, engineering. Due to the large number of proposals received and the limited amount of funds available, the committee was unable to fund all qualified proposals. In addition to considering the goals and the quality of each proposal received, the TAS committee had to use other factors in their decisions, including the applicant’s academic rank, frequency of Butine awards received, and distribution of funds among different schools and disciplines.
