MAT Informational, Oct. 6
Faculty, staff, and students are invited to a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Informational on Monday, October 6, at 6 p.m., in Franz Hall Murphy Room (room 426). The MAT is an intensive program designed to prepare individuals with baccalaureate degrees for teaching in K-12 schools. MAT graduates earn a masters degree and are eligible for Oregon initial licensure at two contiguous levels of authorization: early childhood, elementary, middle and/or high school. New Institutional Review Board Review Request Deadlines
All Institutional Review Board (IRB) requests for review should be submitted to irb@up.edu, according to Michele Leasor, assistant to the provost’s office. Requests should no longer be sent directly to the faculty member in your department.
This fall the IRB Committee is piloting a new deadline and response schedule. The Spring 2015 schedule will be published on www.up.edu/irb by late November. Requests for exceptions to the published schedule must be approved and forwarded by your dean. The deadline for the October 8 meeting has passed. The deadline for proposals for the November 12 meeting will be October 29; a response will be sent by November 19. Come See The Crab Lab, Oct. 3
All students, staff, faculty, and friends are invited to visit the Crab Lab during its open house on Friday, October 3, from noon to 5 p.m., in Swindells 139 and 128, according to Tara Maginnis, biology. With over 500 gallons of saltwater and six species of crabs, there is plenty to explore. Maginnis and her biology research students will be there explaining how the lab works and what kind of research goes on there (and no, they don’t eat the crabs and neither can you).

University Singers, Women’s Chorale Concert, Oct. 4
The University Singers and Women’s Chorale will open their new concert season on Saturday, October 4, at 3 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to faculty, staff, students, and the public. The University welcomes Kathryn Briggs as the new director of the Women’s Chorale with this all-choral program featuring American music, including works by Stephen Paulus, Portland’s own Joan Szymko, and honorary University of Portland alumnus Aaron Copland. Wind Symphony and Orchestra Concert, Oct. 4
The University Wind Symphony and Orchestra will perform a concert on Saturday, October 4, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to faculty, staff, students, and the public.
The Wind Symphony program looks at the use of humor in music, including Percy Grainger’s whimsical Country Gardens, Paul Hart’s Cartoon, and Jonathan Newman’s “bubblegum pop” piece Single, featuring senior vocalist Amelia Segler. Rounding out the program is John Mackey’s Aurora Awakes, one of the most significant band works thus far in the 21st century.
The University Orchestra will feature Margaret Brouwer’s stirring and elegiac tone poem, Remembrances, as well as student concerto competition winner David Yee playing Alexander Glazunov’s Concerto in E flat major for alto saxophone.

The career services office will be hosting a series of LinkedIn labs for students, but faculty and staff are more than welcome, according to Amy Cavanaugh, career services. LinkedIn labs are interactive workshops that will help you to build your profile and your online network. In order to make the best use of your time, please create a basic LinkedIn profile prior to attending a LinkedIn lab and bring your resume and your laptop with you to the workshop. All LinkedIn labs will take place in career services in Orrico Hall. Labs will take place as follows:

Inauguration of the 20th UP President, September 26
Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C., will be inaugurated as University of Portland’s 20th president on September 26, 2014. The Inauguration Mass at 11:45 a.m. and the ceremony at 3 p.m. in the Chiles Center will cap two days of public celebration honoring the new president. All University of Portland community members are invited to celebrate this historic event.
Fr. Poorman was selected as the 20th president by the University of Portland Board of Regents in January 2014. He also served as executive vice president since 2011.
Inauguration events will include:
- Faculty & Staff Reception, Wednesday, September 24, 2014, 3:30-5:30 p.m., The Bluff/Bauccio Commons.
- Classes will be cancelled on Friday, September 26, after 11:15 a.m.
- Inauguration Mass, 11:45 a.m., Chiles Center. All UP community members are welcome. Faculty members are expected to process in academic regalia’ please report to the Chiles Center as soon as possible after 11:15 a.m.
- Inauguration Ceremony, 3 p.m., Chiles Center. All UP community members are welcome. Faculty will be expected to process in academic regalia. Due to the large number of guests from UP and other institutions, faculty are to report to the Chiles Center by 2 p.m.
