While watching the Summer Olympic games follow the University museum and archives blog for daily posts (August 5-21) featuring amateur athletics on The Bluff which are also sports found at the Summer Olympic games. Posts feature a mix of sports memorabilia from the University museum; athletic photographs from the University archives; and early University Olympians.
To celebrate the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio De Janiero (August 5-21), all are welcome to view a display from the University museum of some sports played on the UP campus that are also found in the summer Olympic games. Enjoy photos of UP amateurs and athletes and some of the sports equipment and related memorabilia they used, some information about the Olympics, and a list of University Olympians. The display is located in the Buckley Center first floor display case across from the studies abroad office.
The University’s collegiate mission highlights service and leadership, and those tenets are demonstrated in the thousands of friendships which continue well beyond life after UP. One group of friends, Upsilon Omega Pi, has stood rock solid for 65 years, surviving even the demise of campus fraternities in the early 1990s. The University museum will be open for special hours on Friday, June 24, from 1 – 4 p.m., and Saturday, June 25, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., during the 2016 Alumni Reunion. All University employees, alumni, and friends are welcome to visit the museum in the basement of Shipstad Hall, room 014. The museum contains photographs and memorabilia illustrating the University of Portland’s historical, religious, social, and educational history. In addition to the regular collection there are special exhibits and displays in the museum, Shipstad Hall, first floor of Buckley Center, and Buckley Center Auditorium foyer.

The dual 2016 Commencement exercises on Sunday May 1 allow expanded ticket opportunities and seating for friends and family of our distinguished graduates. Thanks are in line, too, for the unsung faculty marshals tasked with helping to maintain order and a brisk pace for commencements through the years. The University Museum has created two displays to honor the memory of emeritus professor of Spanish Manuel Macias, who passed away on March 19, 2016. Please visit and remember him by viewing items in the Buckley Center first floor display case across from the studies abroad office. See photos and memorabilia donated by Macias to the University Museum, including his extremely memorable blue “lampshade” academic cap and regalia. Also, view an online display and blog post at 
As the spring semester rushes towards its end and blossoms erupt on the University campus, students seek a variety of respites from a multitude of perceived ills.
