April 18, 2019 marks the 50 year anniversary of the University’s Great Fire of ’69, according to museum coordinator Carolyn Connolly. Education Hall, located near the present-day Mago Hunt Center caught fire in the early morning hours and was a total loss, causing the drama, music, and education departments to lose their physical homes on campus along with decades worth of instruments, costumes, the University’s auditorium, and personal and professional documents and items.

The bricks of the Praying Hands Memorial carry the names of UP alumni who lost their lives in war. Each year the University’s Air Force and Army ROTC cadets mark Veterans Day by posting a 24-hour honor guard at the Praying Hands/Broken Wall Memorial for these and the many alumni and alumnae who have served our country in the military. Perhaps the highest distinction earned by any individual in the University alumni family is the Medal of Honor given to David R. Kingsley, Columbia Prep (1933-1936).

The University museum will be open for special hours on Friday, June 23, from 1 – 4 p.m., and Saturday, June 24, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., during the 2017 Alumni Reunion. All University employees, alumni, and friends are welcome to visit the museum in the basement of Shipstad Hall, room 014. The museum contains photographs and memorabilia illustrating the University of Portland’s historical, religious, social, and educational history. In addition to the regular collection there are special exhibits and displays in the museum, Shipstad Hall, and the first floor of Buckley Center.
