Music At Midweek, Sept. 16

meyerj copyThe next Music at Midweek performance will feature New York based violist and teacher Jessica Meyer, who will join with the music program for two weeks. In this week’s session, Jessica performs new compositions for solo viola. Her compositions use traditional and extended techniques inspired by her varied experiences as a contemporary and period instrumentalist.

Meyer’s performance begins at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 16, in Mago Hunt Center recital hall, and is free and open to all. For more information contact performing and fine arts at 7228 or pfa@up.edu.

2015-2016 Faculty/Staff Theater Passes Available Now

comedydramaThe faculty and students of the theater program in performing and fine arts would like to invite all faculty and staff to be their guests in the 2015-2016 academic year. All University ID cards can now serve as season passes for two to all four of main stage UP theater productions.

This year’s fall term season begins on October 7 to 11 with Sarah Ruhl’s The Clean House, directed by Andrew Golla. While in search of the funniest joke in the world, Matilde the housekeeper (who hates to clean) hatches a deal with her employer’s sister (who loves to clean) for an arrangement too good to last in this poignant comedy that considers what’s really important in life.

The second show of the semester is Sarah Treem’s Mirror Mirror, from Nov. 18 to 22. In this dark comedy based on the Snow White tale, ten teens love, lose, and betray each other during one autumnal weekend in a kingdom far, far away.

Spring offerings include a rare treat of American Expressionism, The Adding Machine, a comic yet searing look at technology and its effects on human relationships, by Elmer Rice, running February 24 to 28. The main stage season closes with Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, April 8 to 10 and 13 to 15, directed by Andrew Golla.

All evening performances are at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Because of the success of theater program productions, advanced reservations are recommended through the Hunt Center box office at 7287, or in person at the lobby ticket window, which will be open one week before every production. Simply present a UP ID card, and receive your tickets at no charge.

Artists and Entrepreneurs, Take Note

meyer copyViolinist, composer, and entrepreneur Jessica Meyer will present “Learn How to Go Form Artist to Entrepreneur” on Friday, September 18, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., in Mago Hunt Center. Her talk is free and open to all, and is cosponsored by the performing and fine arts department and the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Club.

Known for her “polish, focus, and excitement” (New York Times) and playing that is “fierce and lyrical” (The Strad), violist and composer Jessica Meyer is a versatile musician who has been featured as a soloist and collaborator throughout the world. She has presented workshops at the Curtis Institute, The Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, NYU, the Longy School of Music, the Chamber Music America Conference, and at various Universities around the country.

Music At Midweek Returns Sept. 9

orchestraThe performing and fine arts department will kick off its Fall 2015 lunchtime concert series, Music at Midweek, with a performance by soprano Katrina Galka and pianist Nicholas Fox on Wednesday, September 9, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., in Mago Hunt Center recital hall. The recital is free and open to all.

Concerts A-Plenty: UP Orchestra, Women’s Chorale

orchestraThe University of Portland Orchestra will present “American Voices,” a free concert on Tuesday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. Faculty, staff, students, and the public are welcome. Highlighting works of American composers and performers, this concert will feature Aaron Copland’s stirring Lincoln Portrait, with narration by Edmund Stone of All Classical Portland. Also on the program will be the premiere of Prometheus, composed by University of Portland senior Dana Coppernoll-Houston, and arias by 2014 Student Concerto/Aria contest winner Amelia Segler.

On Wednesday, April 22, the University of Portland Women’s Chorale will present “Girls Night Out: A Festival of Women in Song,” at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to all, and features women’s choirs from UP, Vancouver School of Arts & Academics, Clark College Women’s Chorale Ensemble, Lewis & Clark College Voces Auream, and Portland State University Vox Femina.

Wind Symphony Concert, April 19

WS Seniors copyThe UP Wind Symphony presents its final concert of the year on Sunday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Buckley Center Auditorium. Included on the program is the World Premiere of Shattering Infinity by Benjamin Taylor. The UP Wind Symphony is the lead commissioner of this piece and is joined in a consortium by such notable universities as Indiana University, San Diego State University, and the University of South Carolina. In addition, the Wind Symphony honors its graduating seniors in their final UP performance with a rousing performance of Danzon No. 2 by Arturo Marquez.

Pre-show Panel, Social for “Three Sisters,” April 11

wine copyPrior to the Saturday, April 11 performance of Three Sisters by Anton Chekov, all ticket holders are invited to enjoy complimentary wine and cheese while listening to campus experts Candace McLean, theology, Mindi Logan, theater, and Elise Moentmann, history, as they highlight production details and illuminate important themes in the play. The reception begins at 6:30 p.m. in Mago Hunt Center lobby before moving into the recital hall for a panel discussion. University Singers Musical Feast, April 18

1aSingers150The University Singers, directed by Michael Connolly, invite all UP community members to the inaugural Musical Feast on Saturday, April 18, in the Bauccio Commons. The evening includes a no-host social (beer and wine) at 6 p.m., dinner at 6:30, and a 7 p.m. show by the choir and UP jazz combo Secret Sauce. The theme of the performance is “A Century of Love Songs,” with music from the ragtime era to the present. Tickets are $25 for non-students and $15 for students. Bon Appetit meal points may be used for purchase for both students and their guests. Tickets must be purchased in advance by Friday, April 10, in the performing and fine arts office in Buckley Center 235, or by phone at 7228. Credit cards are accepted.

UP Student Singers Shine

singersDuring spring break, a group of UP students competed in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition held at Portland State University, according to Nicole Hanig, performing and fine arts. Students from every major university in Oregon and Washington participated. Senior Lydia Blaine won first place in the division for college-age women, and freshman Catherine Jacobs won second place in the same division. Sophomore Tanis Gonzaga-Guzman won second place in the division for college-age men.

“The General,” With Live Soundtrack, March 3

buster keatonThe University Orchestra will Buster Keaton’s classic silent film, “The General,” with live soundtrack, on Tuesday, March 3, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The screening and performance are free and open to all. This will also be the premiere of a new soundtrack composed by UP senior Dana Coppernoll-Houston and music faculty member David De Lyser.
