Make music a part of your holiday plans with the annual Advent Concert featuring the University Singers on Saturday, December 6, at 8 p.m., at St. Mary’s Cathedral. The choir and orchestra will perform Vivaldi’s magnificent Gloria in the beautiful acoustics and space of the cathedral. Michael Connolly, performing and fine arts, will conduct. Airs, Fantasies, and Diamonds: UP Orchestra Concert, Nov. 22
The University of Portland Orchestra will present “Airs, Fantasies and Diamonds: An evening of Symphonic String Music” on Saturday, November 22, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to all.
As a prelude to their January 2015 tour, the orchestra will present an evening of varied music written for string orchestra. Selections will include Karl Jenkins “Palladio,” a portion of which was made famous in DeBeers diamond commercials; selections from Respighi’s “Ancient Airs and Dances,” Alan Hovhannes’ “Celestial Fantasy,” Eric Whitacre’s “October,” and Johann Stamitz’s “Mannheim Symphony.”

Free Concert: Bravo Rosa Parks, Nov. 15
All faculty, staff, students, and the public are welcome to attend a free concert by Bravo Rosa Parks, a youth orchestra based on the El Sistema model of education pioneered in Venezuela, on Saturday, November 15, at 2 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. Seats are expected to be scarce so please arrive early. Bravo Rosa Parks will be joined by world-class cellist Alban Gerhardt, artist in residence for the Oregon Symphony; rising North Portland cellist Adajion (fourth grade at Rosa Parks); and Oregon Symphony violinists Ines Voglar and Vali Phillips.

“The 1940s Radio Hour” opens Nov. 7, Mago Hunt Theater
The performing and fine arts department presents the musical The 1940s Radio Hour by Walton Jones November 7-9 and 13-15. You are cast as the live audience watching a live radio broadcast near Christmas time in 1942. The world is at war, but at a small radio station in New York City is determined to bring some warmth and levity to your holiday season, and to the soldiers overseas. “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” are just two of the many American standards performed in this unique musical.
All performances are at 7:30 p.m., except the Sunday performances, which are at 2 p.m.
Faculty and staff can use your season passes to reserve complimentary tickets. Students can reserve free tickets for the Friday, November 7 or Thursday, November 13 shows. Pre-show Reception For “The 1940s Radio Hour,” Nov. 8
As you firm up your reservations to see the University production of “The 1940s Radio Hour,” remember that all ticket holders are invited to attend a wine and cheese reception and pre-play panel prior to the Saturday, November 8 performance. The doors open at 6:30 that night, and at 6:45 faculty members Christi Hancock (history), Nicole Hanig (music) and Gregory Pulver (theater) will provide a host of insights about the show, further enhancing experience of a lively and wonderful evening of theater. Part of the fun is seeing the panelists pack their brilliance into taut 8-minute packages. This event is provided by the Garaventa Center. Nicole Hanig’s Vocal Performance Workshop class will welcome London-based baritone William Berger as a guest performer on Monday, October 27, at 2:40 p.m., in Mago Hunt Center recital hall. “Scenes and Revelations” Opens Oct. 1, Hunt Center Theater
The performing and fine arts department presents Elan Garonzik’s “Scenes and Revelations,” with performances on Wednesday, October 1 through Sunday, October 5, at 7:30 p.m. (2 p.m. Sunday), in Mago Hunt Center Theater. In 1894, at the height of America’s westward movement, four Pennsylvania sisters must decide whether to forge ahead or to move in the opposite direction as they are haunted by their pasts and face uncertain futures. Wind Symphony and Orchestra Concert, Oct. 4
The University Wind Symphony and Orchestra will perform a concert on Saturday, October 4, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to faculty, staff, students, and the public.
The Wind Symphony program looks at the use of humor in music, including Percy Grainger’s whimsical Country Gardens, Paul Hart’s Cartoon, and Jonathan Newman’s “bubblegum pop” piece Single, featuring senior vocalist Amelia Segler. Rounding out the program is John Mackey’s Aurora Awakes, one of the most significant band works thus far in the 21st century.
The University Orchestra will feature Margaret Brouwer’s stirring and elegiac tone poem, Remembrances, as well as student concerto competition winner David Yee playing Alexander Glazunov’s Concerto in E flat major for alto saxophone.
