2015 Bauccio Lecture in Entrepreneurship: April Rinne

rinneSharing economy expert April Rinne will present “The Sharing Economy: Rethinking Markets, Cities, and Community” at the 2015 Bauccio Lecture in Entrepreneurship on Wednesday, April 1, at 4:10 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The lecture, which concludes this year’s Bauccio Lecture Series, is free and open to faculty, staff, students, and the public.

Rinne is an expert on the linkages and opportunities between the sharing economy and cities, travel and tourism, global expansion, and emerging markets. She advises numerous companies, governments, and think tanks. She serves on sharing economy advisory boards in Seoul, Korea and Amsterdam, and is a Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum. She is also a board member for the Worldwide Web Foundation and a member of REX.

The Bauccio Lecture Series was established with a $250,000 Defining Moment Campaign gift from University regent Fedele Bauccio, ’64, ’66, and his wife, Linda. The gift enables the University to stage a series of lectures with visiting entrepreneurs and visionaries from around the country. MAT Informational, March 31

MATFaculty, staff, and students are invited to a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Informational on Tuesday, March 31, at 6 p.m., in Franz Hall Murphy Room (room 426). The MAT is an intensive program designed to prepare individuals with baccalaureate degrees for teaching in K-12 schools. MAT graduates earn a masters degree and are eligible for Oregon initial licensure at two contiguous levels of authorization: early childhood, elementary, middle and/or high school.

Beacon Wins Best In The Nation

AppleAward.jpgThe University’s student-run campus newspaper, The Beacon, won the national Apple Award for “Best Newspaper” for colleges or universities with fewer than 5,000 students at the annual College Media Association convention in New York City, according to Nancy Copic, student activities. Other winners were The Miami Hurricane of the University of Miami (10,000+ students) and The Eagle of American University (5000-10,000 students).

Copic attended the convention, along with six selected Beacon staffers: Katie Dunn, Malika Andrews, David DiLoreto, Rebekah Markillie, Parker Shoaff, and Jacob Fuhrer. The Beacon has won four other national awards since September, including a Third Place Pinnacle Award for Best Weekly College Newspaper, and three Gold Circle Awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

Thank a Donor, Eat a Donut, March 25

donutsThankful For Donors Day (previously Tuition Freedom Day) is a way to say thank you to the donors who help support nearly everything on campus. Scholarships, dorms, classrooms, the Beauchamp Center, and even the upcoming Pilot House renovation have all been funded by people who want to make UP’s college experience the best it can be. The celebration will take place on Wednesday, March 25, in the Academic Quad. Students will be encouraged to write thank-you notes to donors in exchange for a Voodoo donut. Faculty, staff, and other members of the campus community are also invited to participate.

Father Thomas C. Oddo, C.S.C., Memorial Scholarship

oddoTomShortly after his untimely death in 1989, Univer­sity of Portland president Rev. Thomas C. Oddo, C.S.C., was memorialized by faculty, staff, students, and friends with the establishment of an endowed scholarship fund named after him. Every year the University awards scholarship funds in Fr. Oddo’s name to one or two students who meet a set of criteria which includes demonstrated commitment to service and to service learning. Faculty Speaker Series: Peter Pappas, March 23

pappas copyThe next installment in the Faculty Speaker Series will take place on Monday, March 23, at 3 p.m., in the Clark Library classroom. Peter Pappas, education (pictured), will showcase a variety of innovative technology projects geared to build a network of learning resources beyond the classroom. Some of the student projects covered in the presentation include developing a mobile iOS app, co-authoring a WordPress blog, publishing two popular iBooks, and hosting a global Twitter chat. Pappas will also preview an upcoming workshop on how to use iBooks Author. All are welcome, and refreshments will be provided.

UP Hive Network Event, March 25

HivenewThe next UP Hive Network event , “IMPROVe with I mprov,” will take place on Wednesday, March 25, at 5:30 p.m., at Colorhouse (519 NE Hancock St., #B). A panel of improvisers will present ways to learn the fundamental skills of improve and how they can be applied to the business world:

  • Leon Anderson has appeared in numerous comedy festivals with the improv group Whiskey Tango. By day, Leon is an engineer and uses his improvisation skills to problem solve and lead design teams.
  • Rachel Van Nes graduated from UP in 2014 and serves as artistic administrative assistant at Curious Comedy Theater. Rachel got her start in improv with UP’s Bluffoons and is a proud member of Curious Comedy’s Playas as a performer, instructor and producer.
  • Jed Arkley, who has 20 years of experience in improve and sketch comedy, is the founder of Arkley Rodriguez, a consulting company which helps businesses translate creative energy into workable systems that support growth and positive culture.
  • Jake Michels is the educational program assistant at Oregon Children’s Theater, as well as the education director at Curious Comedy Theater. Jake produces comedy showcases and preforms regularly with the improv group Whiskey Tango.

A Taste Of The Islands: Hawaii Club Luau, March 28

luauThe University of Portland Hawaii Club’s 39th annual Luau will take place on Saturday, March 28, in the Chiles Center. The popular event is filled with food, dance, and celebration, and this year’s theme is “Pi’i Mai Ka Nalu (Ride the Wave).” Each year students from Hawaii and their families share their Polynesian culture and traditions with the University and greater Portland communities.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Following a traditional luau meal, there will be a show featuring live music, hula, and traditional Polynesian dances performed by University students. General admission tickets (12-55 years old) are $20; student, faculty, staff, and alumni tickets are $10 (additional tickets purchased are $15); senior citizens (55+ years old) are $15; groups of 5 or more are $15 apiece; children (4-11 years old) are $10; and children under 4 years old are free. Tickets will be available March 23-27 in Bauccio Commons, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets may also be purchased at the door on the night of the event.

Kate Regan Short Film Festival, March 26, Bauccio Commons

Staff and faculty portraitsThe second annual Kate Regan Short Film Festival will take place on Thursday, March 26, from 5 to 7 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons board room. The festival will feature works from UP students, faculty, and staff in five categories: Narrative, Humor, International, Documentary, or Animation. Join with the campus community for a celebration of UP storytellers and filmmakers, and of course the late Kate Regan. The film screenings and awards ceremony will include free popcorn and refreshments, a photo booth, and raffle prizes for the audience. The festival is free and open to all. Anita Gooding, social work, was selected as a 2020-2021 Field Research Scholar by the Transforming Field Education Landscape (TFEL) program at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. Bob Butler, professor emeritus of environmental studies; Jenda Johnson, Earth Sciences Animated; and Nic Zentner, Central Washington University, published an animation titled “Ghost Forests: Evidence for a Giant Earthquake & Tsunami in the Pacific Northwest.” This animation explores how Native American oral history, geology of ghost forests in coastal Washington and Oregon, and written accounts of a tsunami that flooded Japanese Pacific Coast villages converge to document the most recent Cascadia subduction zone megathrust earthquake on January 26, 1700 at about 9 p.m. The Ghost Forest animation can be found on the IRIS website at: https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/animation/740 or on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xPbt8iiDRo&feature=youtu.be.
