“What Does International Education Mean at UP?,” Nov. 18

A panel discussion, “What does International Education mean at the University of Portland?,” will take place on Wednesday, November 18, from 5-6 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons Terrace Room. Barbara Braband, Rev. James Gallagher, C.S.C., Mike Pelley, and Blair Woodward will take part, moderated by Eduardo Contreras, studies abroad (pictured). At an institution like UP that values teaching highly and focuses on educating the whole student, what is the role of international education? Put differently, in what ways, if at all, does international education impact teaching and learning, faith and formation, and service and leadership at the University of Portland? All are welcome to attend and learn more about international education on The Bluff.

International Education Week, Photo Contest

International Education Week (IEW) will take place on the UP campus from November 16-22, according to Trisha Elizarde-Miller, international student services. All are invited to go to multicultural events on and off campus:watch Riverdance, make sushi, learn Filipino history, listen to Indigenous people’s storytelling, and more. Many clubs and organizations have opportunities lined up for the broader community to learn more about the diverse cultures represented on campus and beyond.

Faculty and Staff Needed for International Education Week

IEW is a joint initiative sponsored by the US Department of State and Department of Education. IEW celebrates internationalization and diversity on college campuses across the nation each November. This year, UP will celebrate IEW from November 16th through 20th.

International Student Services and the International Club are seeking faculty, staff, and student group collaboration to highlight international exchange and education on campus. Please consider hosting an event during the week to share or promote your international and intercultural programs, research, student projects and more! The IEW coordinating team will assist in promoting the week of events, speakers, music and workshops to the UP campus and community.

International Education Week (IEW) is a joint initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and Department of Education. IEW celebrates internationalization and diversity on college campuses across the nation each November. This year, UP will celebrate IEW from November 17 through November 22. International student services and the International Club have collaborated with faculty, staff, and student groups to host a week of unique events. This year will bring films, speakers, workshops, music, and delicious new foods to campus. All events are open to UP staff, faculty and community.

International Night on Saturday, November 22nd is the final event of the week, during which professional and student musicians, dancers, and artists from around the world will perform and showcase their cultures. On that night, international cuisine will be served in the Bauccio Commons.

International Education Week, Nov. 17-21

All faculty, staff, and students are invited to consider participating in International Education Week (IEW) 2014, observed November 17-21 and hosted by the UP International Club in collaboration with international student services, international languages and cultures, ASUP, and other student clubs. Throughout the week of IEW, the planning committee will be hosting and promoting events across campus that celebrate international education and exchange. To see what has happened in the past, browse the schedule of last year’s events on the IEW website.

Sponsors invite faculty members to consider hosting a lecture or activity during a class session the week of November 17-21 on an international topic related to course content or to encourage any student groups they may advise to host an event. Participation in IEW is wholly optional, and may be designed in any way faculty see fit. The IEW planning committee is happy to discuss ideas for participation in greater detail with any interested faculty. International Education Week, Nov. 18-23

The University of Portland will celebrate the 50th anniversary of International Education Week from November 18 to 23, according to the international student services office. Faculty, students, and staff have planned exciting events throughout the week that showcase the global diversity in our community. A few of the events include a faculty lecture series, foreign language conversation groups, and cross-cultural films. All events are open to the UP community and their families.
