The University of Portland will celebrate its annual International Night in support of continuing Diversity Dialogues on Friday, March 22, beginning at 5 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons. The annual event is a night for the campus and community to come together and celebrate everything that international cultures contribute to the world. The event is free and open to the public and will start off with a student hosted Showcase of Cultures highlighting various countries and cultures from around the world. Student and professional musicians including Kalabharathi, Trio Tsuica, and Mariachi Viva Mexico will begin at 6 p.m. During the night, international cuisine will be served a la carte. There will also be free henna body art, family activities, and a photo booth for participants to enjoy.

All students, faculty, staff, and religious of all faiths, spiritual traditions, and languages are warmly invited to participate in this year’s Prayers for Peace event on Friday, November 9, at 2 p.m., at the International Peace Garden by Buckley Auditorium. As part of the event, international students and others from the UP community will offer public calls for peace in their native language. International Education Week (IEW) is a global initiative to celebrate international education and exchange, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and Department of Education. IEW celebrates internationalization and diversity on college campuses across the nation each November. This year, UP will celebrate IEW from November 12 through 16.
The IEW team is seeking faculty, staff, and student group collaboration to highlight international exchange and education on campus. Please consider hosting an event during the week to share or promote your international and intercultural programs, research, student projects and more. The IEW coordinating team will assist in promoting the week of events, speakers, music and workshops to the UP campus and community.

Effective July 1, 2018, a new academic unit, the Office of International Education, Diversity, and Inclusion, will be created that will include the following functions and personnel:

- Director of Studies Abroad: Eduardo Contreras
- The Collaborative for International Studies and Global Outreach (CISGO)
Offering support to the director of equity and inclusion will be Yuri Hernandez Osorio, coordinator for diversity and inclusion programs in the Office of Student Activities.
Based on Tactic D 1.1 of the University’s Vision 2020 Strategic Plan (“Create a position to lead and support existing campus-wide international and intercultural endeavors, and to expand opportunities”), Eduardo Contreras will assume responsibility for this unit as assistant provost. The unit will be housed in Buckley Center and it will include a space where students can gather in a supportive environment that embodies the University’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity.

The annual event is a night for the campus and greater Portland community to come together and celebrate international and cultural exchange at UP. The event is free, family-friendly, and open to the public. Activities include the student-hosted Showcase of Nations, highlighting various regions and cultures around the world; a photobooth, henna body art, and kids activities. The stage will host student and professional musicians including Mariachi Viva Mexico, UP Vietnamese Student Association, Murray School of Irish Dancing, Indonesian Performing Arts of Oregon, Kalabarathi School of Dance, and a number of student and alumni performers. During the night, international street food will be served by Bon Appetit and priced a la carte.
In 2013, UP celebrated its 50th Anniversary of participating in International Education Week (formerly known as International Week). This week the University takes part in International Education Week once again. Please check the calendar of events at up.edu/iew and feel free to attend any events. Three French teaching assistantships have been granted to University of Portland French studies graduates by the French government, according to Trudie Booth, international languages and cultures. Emma Bauer ’17, Clare Munger ’15, and Jenna Kunz ’17 will be teaching in France this coming academic year. A fourth UP alumna applied and may receive word later this summer.
The assistantships are sponsored by the French Ministry of Education and the Cultural Services office of the French Embassy and give eligible French majors the opportunity to teach English in French elementary and high schools.
The French Ministry of Education sets aside over 1,100 Teaching Assistantships for Americans every year, and recipients work in France for 7 months, teaching English to French students of all ages.
