The Clark Library invites students, faculty, and staff to submit proposals for the Dr. James T. Covert Gallery. Selected proposals will be exhibited during the 2020–21 academic year.
We welcome your art, whether painting, photography, or mixed media. If you have 9-10 pieces that you like, we will assist you with transforming them into an exhibit. Selected exhibitors also have the option to be included in the Library’s online collection, which can be found using this link.
New this year, we are also accepting proposals for curated exhibits related to the University’s history, using historical images and artifacts from the UP archives and museum. Staff will assist exhibitors with finding and selecting materials related to proposed topics.

The Oregon Heritage Commission has awarded a grant to the Clark Library to digitize one of the University’s most important and unique heritage resources: The Beacon. This student-run newspaper was published in print for over eight decades, from 1935 to 2016. The newspaper is a gold mine of information about the University’s history and culture, as well as a treasure trove of photos, biographical data, and articles covering major national and international events. This fifteen-month digitization project will begin in early December 2019 and will preserve the print editions of The Beacon in digital form for generations to come.
A film highlighting Ecuadorian traditions and culture, produced by José Velazco, Clark Library, will be screened as part of International Education Week on Wednesday, November 20, at 5 p.m., in Franz Hall 120. Five years ago, Velazco found himself struggling to film his father’s funeral for his documentary. Having to separate the roles of a grieving son and director was the hardest challenge for Velazco. The documentary — “En Vida” — shows Velazco through his loss, ultimately bringing his family closer together and seeing the value in his Ecuadorian heritage as he navigates both his life in the U.S. and his roots in Ecuador. Velazco has been the digital lab coordinator at the University of Portland for six years and looks forward to sharing his personal story with the UP community.

The Clark Library is hosting a reception for “Down Around the Corner: An Exhibit of Paintings by Mark Ghyselinck, C.S.C.” on Friday, October 25, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Please join us for refreshments while viewing his impressionistic depictions of the beauty around us from as far away as Salzburg to as close as here on campus. Fr. Ghyselinck is the pastoral resident in Shipstad Hall and faculty in the performing and fine arts department. The exhibit will be on display into January.
The Clark Library will host an art exhibit by Fr. Mark Ghyselinck, C.S.C., from October 17 to January 17, with a reception in the Covert Gallery on Friday, October 25. The show is called “Down Around the Corner” and is made up of a series of Fr. Ghyselinck’s landscape paintings. For more information contact the library at x7111 or
