Top Oregon School For Best Value: UP

For the fifth consecutive year, University of Portland was the top Oregon school in the Kiplinger’s Personal Finance annual rankings of best values in private colleges and universities. The University was ranked 65th nationwide among the top 100 private colleges and universities. University of Portland has been the top Oregon school and ranked in the top 100 all five years since Kiplinger’s began releasing its rankings of best value private universities.

Kiplinger’s assesses quality according to measurable standards, including the admission rate, the percentage of students who return for sophomore year, the student-faculty ratio and the four-year graduation rate. Cost criteria include sticker prices, financial aid and average debt at graduation.

Nominations For Annual Alumni Awards Due By Dec. 14

Each year the University of Portland Alumni Association presents awards to alumni for their outstanding contributions to their professional fields, for their dedication to volunteer endeavors, and for their ongoing support of the University and its mission. Alumni may be nominated in the following three categories by Sunday, December 14:

Dinstinguished Alumni Award: Established in 1960 and renamed in 1982, the Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes alumni who have rendered distinguished service to the University and to their community. Submit nomination or view previous recipients.
Rev. Thomas C. Oddo, C.S.C., Outstanding Service Award: Established in 1983 and rededicated in 1991 to honor late University president Rev. Thomas C. Oddo, C.S.C., the Outstanding Service Award recognizes alumni who have demonstrated the University’s mission through volunteerism. Submit nomination or view previous recipients.
Contemporary Alumni Award: Established in 1995, the Contemporary Alumni Award recognizes alumni graduates of the past 15 years for significant professional contributions to the community and support of the University.

Faculty & Staff Giving Campaign Concludes Friday, Dec. 5

Each year faculty and staff are asked to help support the University and its students, programs, and spaces. As a part of the Faculty and Staff Giving Campaign, open November 3 to December 5, those who wish to contribute through payroll deduction must re-enroll to continue their donations in January. Employees can donate a minimum of $10 per month through payroll deduction to one designated fund and sign up for an additional donation to a second fund as well. To re-enroll, simply visit http://tinyurl.com/p3o5ooh.

Employees can also make a one-time gift of any amount by writing a check or paying by credit card online. One-time gifts can be for any amount and designated for any fund.

The Faculty and Staff Giving Campaign is one of the most strategic funding campaigns for the University. These gifts underwrite tuition support for students and important projects like the new Clark Library. Additionally, employee gifts send a powerful message to alumni, businesses, foundations, and friends of the University—that those closest to UP support it financially as well as professionally. Be A Part Of UP: Get Your Beauchamp Center Pavers Now

In honor of the new Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center, this week UP is launching its Legacy Paver Program. By purchasing a specially engraved paving stone, students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the University will have the chance to leave their personal and permanent legacy as a physical part of the UP campus.

Paver sections can be purchased for $100 for a 6×9 space or $200 for a 6×18 space. The pavers will be engraved with personal inscriptions designed by each purchaser. During the summer, the engraved pavers will be permanently installed at the entrance of Beauchamp Center.

Paver purchases are tax deductible, and proceeds from the sales will support construction costs for the new recreation center. At this time a limited number, approximately 1,100 pavers, are available for purchase.

$300,000 Gift For Pilot House Renovations

The University of Portland has received an anonymous gift of $300,000 from a 1980 alumnus for renovation of the Pilot House. The renovation will cost an estimated $2.2 million, and the project is expected to move forward as additional funds are secured. The project includes a number of major improvements that will provide social, recreational and cultural opportunities to enrich student life.

The Pilot House has welcomed thousands of students and alumni since 1951 and will continue to do so with the proposed renovations. The redesigned facility will be open in the evenings, providing music, comedy, and other entertainment. It will have a comfortable lounge area with seating and a friendly ambiance, serving pub-type fare and beverages.

Fedele Bauccio Honored For Redefining Food Service Industry

University of Portland alumnus Fedele Bauccio ’64, ’66, co-founder and CEO of Bon Appétit Management Company, has received the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year 2014 Retail and Consumer Products Award. Bauccio was recognized for redefining the institutional food service industry and being a pioneer in environmental and local sourcing policies.

Bauccio (pictured with Commons co-managers, top left) got his start in food services as a dishwasher during his freshman year at UP. Midway through his junior year he was managing the University’s food service program in the dining hall that now bears his name. After graduation, he worked for 20 years in the industry, but always dreamed of starting his own enterprise. In 1987, he launched Bon Appétit Management Company, an on-site restaurant company that operates more than 500 highly customized onsite restaurants at corporations, private universities, museums, and sports venues, including the University of Portland.

UPtogether Faculty & Staff Giving Campaign, Nov. 3-Dec. 5

Last week marked the beginning of the annual Faculty and Staff Giving Campaign, running from November 3 to December 5. During this time, the development office asks employees to make their annual gifts and pledge their support to the University. Last year, more than 400 employees donated and together raised nearly $100,000 for student scholarships and grants, building projects like the Clark Library, athletics, and for various programs such as Entrepreneur Scholars, fine arts, and the Moreau Center.

Faculty & Staff gifts are some of the most important gifts to UP since they send a powerful message to students, alumni, businesses, foundations, and friends of the University: that those closest to UP support its mission financially as well as professionally.

New Nursing Gifts Total $40K

The University of Portland has received $40,000 in gifts to help add a Maternal-Child Simulation Lab to its School of Nursing Learning Resource Center. The gifts include a $25,000 gift from the Collins Medical Trust and $15,000 from Mario and Donna Giordano, of Huntington Beach, Calif., and both gifts were instrumental in the early success of funding the new lab.

The Giordanos’ daughter, Amber Giordano Livingston, is a 2011 graduate of the School of Nursing and is currently enrolled in the University’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program. The Collins Medical Trust is a Portland non-profit established in 1956 by Truman W. Collins. The University’s Learning Resource Center (LRC) is a sophisticated, state-of-the-art model hospital and clinic used to prepare graduate and undergraduate nursing students. The new lab will allow the School of Nursing to take pediatric and maternity education to the next level – providing student nurses the opportunity to develop real life-saving skills, focused on children and mothers, in a controlled environment.

Join the UP Shamrock Run team

Show your UP pride and help out a great cause when you join UP’s Shamrock Run team – we’ll give you free UP gear to wear at the race, Sunday, March 15 at Waterfront Park in downtown Portland.

To join the UP team, you must register online at http://www.shamrockrunportland.com/ (choose the “team” option; the UP code is 1070). Packet pick-up (race t-shirt, pins, bibs, and UP gear) will be available on campus closer to the race date – more information to come soon. Online registration for teams closes Saturday, January 31!

As an added bonus, if we have at least 75 members on the UP team, Shamrock Run will donate $5 per person to the long-anticipated Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center, which opens to the University community in August 2015.

Last year the UP race team consisted of roughly 160 runners and walkers and was the 7^th largest team at the race. We were able to raise nearly $800 for the Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center.
