Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center: One Year And Counting!

August 26, 2016

Beauchamp Center DedThe recreational services office celebrated the one-year anniversary of the opening of the Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center on Wednesday, August 24.

“The facility has had a huge impact on campus and we are thrilled with the growth of our programs this year,” says Rec Services director Brian Dezzani. “More students, faculty and staff are working out than ever before at UP.  I’m sure our recruiting efforts benefit from this great building as well. I heard a parent touring campus with her son, a potential student from Puyallup, Washington, say ‘It’s tough for other schools to compete when he sees a recreation center like this.'”

For more information contact recreational services at 7177 or dezzani@up.edu.

$500,000 Murdock Grant For Beauchamp Center

April 27, 2015

UP-Beauchamp-design copy copyThe University has received a grant of $500,000 from M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust for the Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center, currently under construction and named in recognition of former University President Rev. E. William Beauchamp, C.S.C. The Beauchamp Center, with an estimated cost of $23.7 million is expected to be completed this summer in time for the next academic year.

The center is being constructed entirely from donor-supported funding and has a wide variety of support from a number of constituents, including the University’s board of regents, who have committed several million dollars to the project. In addition, young alumni met a matching donation of $50,000, and the student government association gave more than $72,000. And recently, the University launched a “buy a paver” program to help support the center.

The two-story, 72,270 square-foot facility is expected to become a dynamic focal point on campus and enhance the physical and mental health of students, faculty and staff. Design elements of the new center include: expanded fitness areas with cardio machines, weights, and strength stations; a gymnasium with three courts; climbing wall; indoor track; a large outdoor pursuits center; and multiple studios for functional training, spin classes, yoga, health assessment testing, and counseling. The facade of the building will incorporate brick and large glass windows, and openness will be a theme throughout the building.

Beauchamp Center Construction Underway

June 16, 2014

poormanravelli2Construction on the Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center started on May 19 with removal of the sod and retaining wall, according to Paul Luty, director of facilities planning and construction. Job trailers were set up and fencing put in place to keep curious onlookers at a safe distance. Site excavation commenced next, with all soil removed from the site being trucked down to the River Campus to be reused for future soccer and track facilities. The oak trees and the old public safety house came down next, with the help of Fr. Mark Poorman and Jim Ravelli (pictured before their turn at the controls of the excavator). All the concrete from the old site was hauled down to the River Campus to be ground up for use elsewhere. Next the workers excavated the two lower recreation courts and started digging and setting four new stormwater drywells. The first footings for the new building will be dug and formed this week, with a concrete pour scheduled the week of June 23. The oak tree trunks will be milled to be used in the new recreation building and/or the Cove project.

For more information on campus construction projects contact Luty at 8874 or luty@up.edu.
