Farewell party for Trevor Harvey, August 29

Please plan to join the development office in a farewell gathering for Trevor Harvey, who is moving to Vancouver, BC. The gathering will take place on Wednesday, August 29, at 3:30 p.m. at the Pilot House.

For more than eight years, the University has benefitted from Trevor’s great service and dedication. Each day he has brought positivity and light to his job.  We will miss his joy, his strong Pilot pride, and his deep commitment to enriching the resources for UP.

Pilot House Open For Business

open nowThe newly refurbished Pilot House is now open for business, after its official dedication on Thursday, October 29. Bon Appetit will offer food from 11 a.m.-midnight Monday-Thursday; 11 a.m.-1 a.m. Friday; 5 p.m.-1 a.m., Saturday; and 5 p.m.-midnight Sunday.

Summer Projects On The Way

hUniversity operations will be busy over the summer implementing plans for four major upgrade projects on campus. Various areas of campus will be impacted while these upgrades are underway.

  • Pilot House Remodel: April 24 will be the last day of service for the Cove as it closes for the summer and renovations begin. The Pilot House will be remodeled to provide space for students to hold events and socialize and will open again in the fall. During finals week Bon Appetit will provide outdoor food options in the Pilot House plaza between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. All food will be served to go. The bookstore will remain open during this time.
  • Villa Maria: Parts of Villa Maria will be remodeled. Army ROTC will relocate to the first floor of Howard Hall.
  • Buckley Center: All four floors of Buckley Center will undergo remodeling, expanding office and educational space.
  • Steam line: Major work for the steam line will occur during the summer and will affect Shipstad, Kenna and Christie.

Pilot House History Display

pilot houseAll are welcome to view a Pilot House history display located in the three display cases in Buckley Center Auditorium foyer, according to museum coordinator Carolyn Connolly. The display covers the original Pilot House dating back to the 1930s; a new Pilot House constructed in 1950-51; and an expanded and remodeled Pilot House in 1985-86, with even more changes planned for this year.

The University museum is located in the basement of Shipstad Hall, room 014, and is open Monday and Tuesday, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; and also by appointment. All are welcome to visit the museum and learn more about UP history.

$300,000 Gift For Pilot House Renovations

pilot house 1988The University of Portland has received an anonymous gift of $300,000 from a 1980 alumnus for renovation of the Pilot House. The renovation will cost an estimated $2.2 million, and the project is expected to move forward as additional funds are secured. The project includes a number of major improvements that will provide social, recreational and cultural opportunities to enrich student life.

The Pilot House has welcomed thousands of students and alumni since 1951 and will continue to do so with the proposed renovations. The redesigned facility will be open in the evenings, providing music, comedy, and other entertainment. It will have a comfortable lounge area with seating and a friendly ambiance, serving pub-type fare and beverages.
