A Given Life: Sr. Angela Hoffman, O.S.B.

angela hoffmanFor wakeful students, a professor nun in the chemistry lab is not a contradiction but a long-term life-altering gift. Fourth in the museum’s “A Given Life” series is Sr. Angela Hoffman, O.S.B., research chemist, distinguished teacher, and consecrated religious. From the River Campus to the classroom, Sr. Hoffman’s yew trees offer University students opportunities to enter into life-saving research projects. Recognized for her achievements in and outside of the classroom, Sr. Angela Hoffman is among the University’s most often awarded current faculty members.

St. Mary’s Convent: 1903-1959

1museum150Among the first buildings on the University campus was St. Mary’s Convent, which served as a residence for the religious sisters who worked in the kitchen and laundry for the University and Columbia Prep students until 1944. Located on what is now part of the quad near the Chapel, Buckley Center, and Commons, St. Mary’s also served as the campus infirmary. A Given Life: Padre

padre copyFor eyes that see, the University witnesses a living series of gift-legacies. Third in the University museum and archives “A Given Life” series is the late Rev. Arthur “Padre” Schoenfeldt, C.S.C., a Portland native and graduate of Columbia Prep. Padre’s gift to the University community was his kindness and generosity toward others, particularly as a willing listener and counselor to many. The family name lives on in a residence hall where Padre’s spirit is alive and well (particularly on bow-tie Fridays) and in the Schoenfeldt Writers Series, established by Padre and his late sister Suzanne Fields in honor of their parents.

A Given Life: Rev. George Dum, C.S.C.

FrDum copyThe second subject for the “A Given Life” series is Rev. George L. Dum, C.S.C., who spent nearly all of his religious life at the University of Portland, arriving here in 1934. While serving as choral director and all-purpose music meister, he was the pride of The Bluff, composing the UP fight song and pep song, and bringing his mother, Charlotte, to campus to teach the boys piano.

Pilot House History Display

pilot houseAll are welcome to view a Pilot House history display located in the three display cases in Buckley Center Auditorium foyer, according to museum coordinator Carolyn Connolly. The display covers the original Pilot House dating back to the 1930s; a new Pilot House constructed in 1950-51; and an expanded and remodeled Pilot House in 1985-86, with even more changes planned for this year.

The University museum is located in the basement of Shipstad Hall, room 014, and is open Monday and Tuesday, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; and also by appointment. All are welcome to visit the museum and learn more about UP history.

A Given Life: Rev. Maurice Rigley, C.S.C.

rigley copyOn February 2, 2015, Pope Francis preached on the World Day for Consecrated Life, saying “For a Religious, to progress means to place themselves in service, that is, to follow the same way of Jesus, ‘who did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped…’ Through this ‘law’ the consecrated can attain wisdom, which is not an abstract attitude but is the work and gift of the Holy Spirit…creative in joy, in wisdom.” The archives and museum are introducing a new series, “A Given Life,” to highlight University of Portland figures who served the Church and UP through their vocation. New Museum Post: UP Pep Band

1939-Band copyThe University Pep Band dates back to the very early years of the University when the college band was formed in 1902. Band uniforms, marching in parades, and performing on football fields were all part of the band’s history, especially in the 1930’s and 40’s. As loyal supporters of University athletic teams, the Pep Band energizes crowds and teams with Pilot Spirit, which has continued through the years.

University Museum Display

karl-mcdade-football-shoes-1930s copyAll are invited to view a display of selections from the University Museum located in the display case across from the Shepard Freshman Resource Center on the first floor of Buckley Center. Included in the display of photographs and memorabilia are football shoes from the 1930’s, baseball mitt from around 1908, equipment used in physics classes, a 1947 dance card, religious articles, and some University and Pilot souvenirs.

To see more historical artifacts and photographs, all are welcome to visit the University Museum in the basement of Shipstad Hall, room 014:  Open Monday and Tuesday, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; Wednesday 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; or by appointment.

KBVM 88.3 FM: 25 Years on Campus

KBVMNestled between Mehling Hall and the physical plant is the home of Catholic radio station KBVM. The station, named in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, first went live in the Portland area on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, December 8, 1989. Since then KBVM’s broadcasting has expanded to a sister station in the Eugene and Springfield area, and listeners can also follow KBVM online. The University archives and museum honor this milestone for KBVM in their latest blog post, along with some photos of UP and Holy Cross guests on KBVM radio, at http://tinyurl.com/n5euh2b.
