Founders’ Day: Tuesday, April 14

founders day girl copyThe University’s annual Founders’ Day celebration will take place on Tuesday, April 14. Four sessions of student presentations will be held in place of regularly scheduled classes, and all students and faculty are encouraged take part in the day’s events, featuring senior presentations, undergraduate research, panel discussions, recitals, and more. Classes scheduled to begin after 4 p.m. will be held as usual.

Founders’ Day was first celebrated at the University in 1902, when University founder Most Rev. Alexander Christie visited the school he had established on The Bluff the summer before. For more information, including a schedule of the day’s events, go to http://www.up.edu/foundersday/.

Seeking Exemplary Service Projects, Programs

houglumThe Moreau Center facilitates the University’s annual application for the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, according to Ann Shultz, Moreau Center. The Corporation for National and Community Service created the honor roll in 2006 to identify, collect, and recognize the outstanding service taking place at higher education institutions across the nation. To maintain UP’s status on the honor roll, the Moreau Center is required to submit three exemplary service projects or programs with measurable results that occurred during the period of July 1, 2013 to July 30, 2014.

Faculty and staff are asked to assist in identifying exemplary service project/programs from their areas to be included in the application. Contact Dave Houglum, Moreau Center, at houglum@up.edu or 8559 prior to March 6. A gift card for $25 in the UP bookstore will be given to anyone whose project is included in the top three. “Whimsy and Humor in The Saint John’s Bible,” Feb. 17

Eric Hollas, OSB, of St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn., will offer a lecture entitled “Humor and Whimsy in The Saint John’s Bible” on Tuesday, February 17, at 7:15 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons board room. In addition to shedding new light on the genesis of The Saint John’s Bible, Fr. Hollas will highlight the many visual puns and quirkiness in the art of the first fully hand-rendered Bible manuscript crafted in over 500 years.

This lecture is part of the Beckman Humor Project, and is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served at the lecture and also at the 6:30 p.m. reception in Buckley Center Gallery that officially kicks off the display of 10 large prints from the project.

President’s Day Mail, Feb. 16

Mount_Rushmore copy copyPresident’s day is celebrated this year on Monday, February 16, which means no incoming mail delivery, according to Mary Scroggins, mailing services. Outgoing mail must be received in the mail center by 2:30 p.m. to be taken to the downtown post office.

MAT Informational, Feb. 17

Photo: © 2008 Andrew M. DaddioFaculty, staff, and students are invited to a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Informational on Tuesday, February 17, at 6 p.m., in Franz Hall Murphy Room (room 426). The MAT is an intensive program designed to prepare individuals with baccalaureate degrees for teaching in K-12 schools. MAT graduates earn a masters degree and are eligible for Oregon initial licensure at two contiguous levels of authorization: early childhood, elementary, middle and/or high school.

African American Read-In, Feb. 19

anjelou copyIn celebration of Black History Month, the University is hosting its annual African American Read-In and free cultural dinner on Thursday, February 19, at 5:30 p.m., in the Terrace Room. The African American Read-In is a national dedication to literary guests sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Multicultural programs, student activities, and the English department invite all students, faculty, and staff to share in the celebration dinner and reading. Participants are encouraged to read a selection from their favorite African American author, poet, playwright, songwriter, or individual work. All are welcome to attend even if they choose not to read.

  • Thursday, February 19, noon to 1:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, February 24, noon to 1:30 p.m.

Retirement Income Options Session With TIAA-CREF, Feb. 10

hThe human resources office will present “A Guide to Your Retirement Income Options” with TIAA-CREF, a seminar that will focus on helping employees understand how they can create income from their TIAA-CREF retirement plan assets, on Tuesday, February 10, 2015, from noon to 1 p.m., in the Terrace Room. A TIAA-CREF representative will discuss lifetime annuities, systematic withdrawal, interest-only payments, fixed-period annuities, and required minimum distributions. Also included will be tips on how employees can begin to build retirement income plans as well as a list of key considerations employees should use in selecting and/or blending income options to meet their unique circumstances.

  • An art exhibit for The Saint John’s Bible opens in the Buckley Center Art Gallery on Monday, February 9. The exhibit Includes 10 large prints from the University’s Heritage Edition of The Saint Johns Bible. The exhibit is free and open to all and end on Friday, March 6.
