Udall Scholarships

Faculty members are requested to nominate students for the Morris K. Udall Foundation scholarships, available to current sophomore or junior students who meet one or more of these criteria:

  • Students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment;
  • Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to public policy;
  • Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to Native American health care.

Nominations are due by Friday, December 14. To submit a nomination or for more information contact John Orr at 7286 or orr@up.edu.

Alumni Employees Luncheon

The Office of Alumni Relations cordially invites all UP employees who are also UP alumni to attend the Sixth Annual UP Alumni Employee Luncheon on Thursday, December 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons boardroom. $500,000 Hollman Gift

The University has announced a $500,000 RISE Campaign gift from graduates Joe Hollman ’64 and Travis Hollman ’92, who own and operate Hollman, Inc., a Dallas-based company that designs and creates locker facilities worldwide. The gift was part of recent renovations of the Chiles Center, spearheaded by a major gift from University regent Earle M. Chiles. The Hollmans’ gift resulted in the modernization and expansion of the men’s locker rooms for basketball, soccer, baseball, and cross country. Similar work was done for the men’s and women’s coaches locker rooms and the men’s and women’s visiting locker rooms. The gift is part of the University’s $175 million RISE Campaign, which has raised more than $140 million to date and is one of the largest development campaigns ever for a Pacific Northwest private college or university. Money Matters

2012 is quickly coming to a close and with year-end comes the time to think about tax returns. Please take a minute to verify your permanent address online (through self-service Banner) and to opt-in to online W-2 delivery. If you need assistance or need to make any changes, please contact payroll at payroll@up.edu.

The start of the year is also a great time to review how to properly document expenses. All expense reimbursement requests must include: what was purchased, the amount, the date, the business purpose of the activity, and the names of participants. Requests should include an itemized receipt. Mileage requests should include the destination, the purpose of the trip, the names of travelers and the number of miles traveled. Pilots vs. Cal State Bakersfield, Ducks this week

The men’s basketball team continues action at home this week with two non-conference games. The Pilots host Cal State Bakersfield tonight (Monday, December 17) and then take on North Florida on Wednesday, December 19. Both games are set for a 7 p.m. tip-off with gates opening at 6 p.m. The women’s basketball team will also be in action at the Chiles Center this week as they are set for a matinee game versus Oregon on Friday, December 21 with a noon tip-off. Holiday Shuttle Schedule

The UP Shuttle will follow a different schedule over winter break, according to Jeff Rook, public safety. Shuttles will run Monday through Thursday, Decem ber 17-20, from 6:55-9:30 a.m. and 3:55-7 p.m., and there will be no service from Saturday, December 22 through Sunday, January 6. Reduced service will resume on Monday, January 7 and will return to normal service on Saturday, January 12. Flex Spending Year End Reminder

Faculty and staff who signed up for Flex Spending accounts for 2012 are reminded that the 2012 balance on their Benny Cards can be used through December 31, 2012. Any remaining funds may be accessed through the normal claim reimbursement process from January 1 to March 15, 2013. All claims for 2012 must be filed by March 31, 2013. Winter Break Hours

During the University’s holiday break the Terrace Room Interim Library will be closed on weekends and from December 24 through January 1, and will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays (see full schedule at http://tinyurl.com/3cxvc88). Library staff will still be working behind the scenes on weekdays between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. and can be contacted by phone or email if you have questions, or need something outside of publicly open hours. The library staff wishes all UP community members a wonderful holiday!

Course Packs Due, Please

Course packs for the spring 2013 semester are due to printing services as soon as possible, according to Kassie Hansen, printing and mailing services. New copyright restrictions often result in a clearance time of four weeks or more, and in order for printing services staff to provide needed course materials, they must have books and documents from faculty well in advance of the end of the fall semester.
