“Why Theology Needs the Simpsons,” Feb. 1
Mike Wode and Brendan Ryan, C.S.C., will present “Why Theology Needs the Simpsons” at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1, in Franz Hall room 120. The event is free and open to all.
Wode and Ryan are members of the residence life staff. They posit: “The Simpsons TV show has defined a generation. Because of its vast influence on culture, including asking the Big Questions, how could theologians not be drawn to The Simpsons?” Come enjoy an evening of surprising insights for people of faith, starting with Homer, Marge, Lisa, and of course, Bartholomew J. Simpson.

Music at Midweek: Oscar Diaz, Trombone
The next Music at Midweek performance will feature Oscar Diaz, Jr., trombonist, at 12:30 p.m., in Mago Hunt Center Recital Hall. His performance is free and open to all.
Diaz was appointed assistant professor of trombone at Texas A&M University Kingsville in 2007. He holds dual bachelors degrees in trombone performance and music education from Texas A&M, a masters degree in trombone performance from The University of Northern Colorado, and a doctor of musical arts degree in trombone performance at the University of Texas at Austin. He has shared the stage with trombone greats such as Bill Reichenbach, Conrad Herwig, Slide Hampton, and The Trombones de Costa Rica to name a few.

Inspired by recent adventures and misadventures when over a foot of fresh powder snow blanketed campus, the University Museum and Archives turn back time to the 1940s and 1950s, when UP had an actual Ski Team. Travel to our blog to read more about the short-lived ski program, witness the cool alpine clothing, snow lodge life with tea and cocoa, and savor Pilot victories swooshing the slopes.

“Mary in Early Christian Faith and Devotion,” Jan. 31
Stephen Shoemaker, professor of religious studies at the University of Oregon, presents “Mary in Early Christian Faith and Devotion” at 7:15pm on Tuesday, January 31 in Franz Hall room 120. The event is free and open to all.
In his talk, Shoemaker will delve into ancient images and texts to provide evidence that devotion to the Virgin Mary began much earlier than previously thought. Shoemaker specializes in early Marian literature and devotion, early Christian apocryphal literature, and the emergence of Islam in relation to the religious cultures of Mediterranean late antiquity.

Bauccio Lecture Series Keynote: “Beyond Political Correctness,” Feb. 2
The Franz Center invites University community members to the Bauccio Lectures Series Keynote, “Beyond ‘Political Correctness’: Success and Everyday Leadership” by Neal Lester on Thursday, February 2, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons. Lester is currently a foundation professor of English with specializations in African American literature and cultural studies, and is also the founding director of Project Humanities for Arizona State University. He speaks nationally and internationally on issues concerning inclusion, diversity, and race. He has published many scholarly works and has been recognized for his work by the Dali Lama. Need a Parents Night Out?
University parents are invited to take the opportunity to enjoy four hours of free time with their significant others while the UP onsite daycare watches their children on Parents Night Out, Friday, February 3, from 6-10 p.m. This service is provided by Vermont Hills Family Life Center daycare/preschool. The cost is $30 for one child or $40 for two kids or more, and includes dinner for the little ones.
