Giving Tuesday: Let’s Raise 100 New Gifts for UP

purple-present150On Tuesday, November 29, Pilots near and far will come together to celebrate Giving Tuesday for the first time at UP, according to Amy Eaton, development. For this day, our goal will be to raise 100 new gifts within a 24-hour period. When we reach the 100 gifts, a $10,000 gift from a generous parent will be unlocked to support student scholarships at UP.

The Senior Class Gift Committee will be joining efforts with University relations to raise awareness and engage students in this great philanthropic event.  Students will set up a giving station at the Pilot House, with photo opportunities with Wally Pilot.  Marketing and communications will launch a fun social media campaign, alumni relations will engage their chapters, and development will be reaching out to all channels to inspire support for UP students.

Giving Tuesday is a fantastic day for faculty and staff to make their gifts too.  To participate, simply go online to this link.  If you are already signed up for payroll deduction (watch your inbox soon for next year’s renewal) you can still participate by following UP’s social media to “like” and “share” fun Giving Tuesday content with your friends. Use the hashtags #UPGives and #GivingTuesday and share why you support giving to UP.

The Office of Development is very excited to kick off the season of giving tomorrow.  By joining Giving Tuesday, UP will officially be a part of a global movement and celebration of generosity.

Don Galarneau, 1924-2016

don-galarneauDon Galarneau ’49, a longtime benefactor and supporter of the University’s mission, passed away on Saturday, August 20. Galarneau graduated from UP with a degree in general science/physics and worked as a field engineer internationally for GE for many years. He gave over $1.5 million dollars over his lifetime (including matching gifts from GE) and was one of UP’s most ardent supporters.

Galarneau was especially generous when it came to supporting the Shiley School of Engineering. He established the Donald T. Galarneau Endowed Scholarship for electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, and math majors in 2002; since that time, there have been 25 recipients who have been awarded the scholarship, totaling $56,530.

In addition to the scholarship fund, he made gifts to the Engineering Building Fund for renovation of the Engineering Building; the Galarneau Engineering Student Project Fund; Murdock Challenge Engineering Match Fund; Clark Family Library Renovation Fund (Don funded two study rooms in the library which bear his name); the Donald P. Shiley School of Engineering Fund; SAE Society/Galarneau Mini Baja Project Fund/Formula Team; the Science and Engineering Equipment Fund  (Don funded the purchase of a 3D printer in addition to other equipment); Portland Magazine, the School of Engineering general fund; Rev. David T. Tyson, C.S.C. Distinguished Professorships; the Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center, and more.

Businessman, Philanthropist, Regent Earle M. Chiles, 1933-2016

earlechiles copyPortland businessman and philanthropist Earle M. Chiles passed away on Thursday, June 23, after a long illness. Chiles was a longtime supporter of the University of Portland and had been a member of the University’s Board of Regents since 1975.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 1, at St. Mary’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 1716 NW Davis St. in Portland, with University president Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C., presiding. A luncheon for family and friends will be held afterwards at the Earle A. and Virginia H. Chiles Center on campus.

Chiles received his undergraduate degree from Menlo College and held a master’s degree in business administration from Stanford University. As president of the Chiles Foundation, he assisted thousands of Oregonians through grants to non-profit organizations and transformed lives through gifts to higher education and medical research. He was the chief executive officer of Chiles and Affiliated Companies and served on the board of directors of Fred Meyer, Inc. His father, Earle A. Chiles, was the stepson of local supermarket pioneer, Fred Meyer.

Chiles and his late parents had a longtime relationship with the University. Spanning over 40 years, Earle Chiles and the Chiles Foundation generously contributed over $10 million to the University. Most significantly, the Chiles Foundation provided the lead gift to construct the Earle A. and Virginia H. Chiles Center, which was dedicated in 1984. The center ushered in a new era for the University, and it quickly became a cultural and athletic center not only for the campus but the region.

He was also a major supporter of Pilot Athletics, with the Chiles Foundation providing funding for its programs and student-athletes. In 1994, Earle was named to the Pilots Hall of Fame for his decades of support. More recently, in 2011 the Chiles Foundation gave $2 million to support the expansion of the Chiles Center and the renovation of its locker facilities. In addition to athletics, the Chiles Foundation generously contributed to the Rev. Chester “Pru” Prusynski Endowed Scholarship in Accounting to honor Earle’s longtime friendship with the priest. He also was the benefactor of one of the 14 bells that ring out from the iconic Bell Tower and for many years he provided support for the ongoing floral arrangements in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher.

Chiles was a trustee emeriti and overseer of Boston University and overseer emeriti of the Boston Symphony Orchestra; a lifetime member of the board of the Oregon Symphony Association; and a life trustee of the High Desert Museum in Bend, Oregon. He was a board member of Providence Portland Medical Foundation; on the advisory board of Providence Heart and Vascular Institute; an honorary member of the advisory board of the Institute of International Education in San Francisco; a past advisory board member of the Graduate Schools of Business at Stanford University and Harvard University; and a past board member of Menlo College.

In 1987, the University awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Public Service degree. He received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Boston University; an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Menlo College; a Presidential Medal from University of Oregon; the Aubrey R. Watzek Award from Lewis and Clark College; and the Simon Benson Award for Philanthropy from Portland State University. He was a Senator of the Board at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, Germany, and was awarded the Silver Cross of Honor from the German Armed Forces.

You Must Be Joking! Brian Doyle Scholarships, 2016-2017

Five University of Portland students have been awarded $3,333 Brian Doyle Scholarships in Gentle & Sidelong Humor, having agreed to publicly share a project that “brings the community together in laughter, acts as a statement that the cultural bias to cruel humor and constant irony is shallow, promotes helpless giggling, and insists gently that true humor is a weapon against violence and greed,” as set forth by donor John Beckman ’42, who began the scholarships with his wife Patricia as part of the RISE Campaign. The recipients are:

  • Molly Kerns, who will borrow a page from the Portsmouth Sinfonia, which chose to take skillful musicians and have them play several well-known pieces after switching instruments with each other. The results are music that is just recognizable and entirely hilarious.
  • Isabelle Pisani, who proposes to create a short film titled “I could never be a nurse” with the help of the School of Nursing, to provide a comical glimpse into the life of a student nurse.
  • Alana Laanui, who intends to produce and share a video working with some of the Holy Cross priests on campus. She will show them how to use Snapchat and record their reactions to some of the more popular filters.
  • Guadalupe Zamora-Resendiz, whose idea is to conduct a project combining the lyric theater, music, actUP, and improv clubs on campus in a music/theater production where the students of these clubs, as well as other UP students who wish to participate, present scenes ranging from Shakespeare to more modern works to improv and works from opera to musical theater.
  • Sawyer Hudson proposes broadcasting a comedy podcast talkshow at KDUP, inspired by alternative comedy podcasts like “Comedy Bang Bang,” “improv4humans,” and audience participation shows like “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me.”

New Gift By Allen and Kathleen Lund Announced

lunds150University president Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C., announced at the May Board of Regents meeting that Allen and Kathleen Lund have made a significant gift in support of the University of Portland. This gift brings the Lund family commitment to the University to over $10 million. To honor the Lunds’ new commitment and past charitable contributions, the new residence hall scheduled to open in August will be named Lund Family Hall.

The Lunds are longtime supporters of the University of Portland and Catholic education. Allen is the president and CEO of the Allen Lund Company, a transportation and logistics brokerage, which he established in 1976. He is chairman of the University of Portland’s Board of Regents and has been a member of the board since 2001.

Allen and Kathleen Lund recently received the University’s highest honor, the Christus Magister medal, at the 2016 Commencement ceremonies, in recognition of their dedication to the mission of the University. Their support made possible the University’s Bell Tower, which has quickly become an iconic campus landmark since its dedication in 2009. The Lunds’ support also includes the establishment of an endowed scholarship, the building of the new Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center, and the aquisition of a rare Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible, which is on permanent display in the Clark Library.

Annual Scholarship Luncheon, April 12

Scholarship LunchThe University will host its annual Scholarship Luncheon as part of Founders’ Day on Tuesday, April 12, in the Chiles Center. The invite-only luncheon provides an opportunity for scholarship donors and supporters to connect with the students they help to support.

During the luncheon, the University will recognize the many alumni, parents, and friends whose charitable gifts have resulted in 402 endowed scholarships and 79 annual scholarships for the 2015-16 academic year. These donor scholarships currently provide more than $2.89 million in aid to about 709 University of Portland students.

The luncheon program will focus on the power of scholarship giving and will highlight the Ralph and Sandra Richardson Miller Endowed Scholarship and the Brian Doyle Annual Scholarships in Gentle & Sidelong Humor.

Ralph and Sandi Miller established their scholarship to assist U.S. naturalized citizens. Ralph Miller immigrated to the U.S. as a young child and was given a helping hand from his community. He received his MBA at the University in 1973 and joined the Board of Regents in 1993. The Millers’ generosity has directly impacted over 70 UP students since their scholarship’s inception in 2006.

The Brian Doyle Annual Scholarships in Gentle & Sidelong Humor was established by the late John and Patricia Beckman because they believed in the power of humor; when people laugh together, there is a gentle warmth in the room, when they laugh together, they can’t be arrogant or violent.

Time To Nominate Students for Maloney Scholarships

maloney copyNominations are being taken now for the Maloney Family Foundation Endowed Scholarship, and are due by May, 6, 2016. Each year, the development office invites University faculty and staff to nominate current full-time undergraduate students that are here for the 2016-17 school year who meet the following criteria as established by the donor:

  • Academic achievement
  • Outstanding contribution to the University
  • Outstanding contribution to the community.

Over recent years, the scholarship fund has provided financial support to two students annually.

Nominations should provide information about a students’ activities, involvement with campus projects, community service/volunteer efforts off-campus, and any awards or special recognition. Grade level is not specified, but preference will be given to seniors who plan to graduate in May or August of 2017.

Bob Maloney ’64 is a shareholder in the Portland law firm of Lane Powell. He served as a member of the President’s Advisory Council for the College of Arts and Sciences and is past chair of the board of directors of the Oregon Alliance of Independent Colleges & Universities (OAICU).

Gratitude Sure Feels Great!

  • 600 grateful Pilots wrote a note within the first 30 minutes of the event
  • A photographer captured some great moments. See them at this link
  • All 140 dozen Voodoo Doughnuts were distributed
  • Nearly 1,700 notes were collected – Over 40 percent of the student body participated.

Thank a Donor, Eat a Donut: This Wednesday!

donutsThankful For Donors Day (previously Tuition Freedom Day) is the day to say “thank you” to the more than 7,000 generous donors that help support UP each year. The many donations that come from alumni, parents, and friends help fund nearly everything on campus—scholarships, dorms, classrooms, the Beauchamp Center, and even the bustling Pilot House have been funded by people who want to make UP’s college experience the best it can be.

The celebration will take place in the Academic Quad, where students will be encouraged to write thank-you notes to donors in exchange for a Voodoo donut. Faculty, staff, and other members of the campus community are also invited to participate on Wednesday, March 23, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Engineering Alumnus Establishes VanGrunsven Professorship

DickVanGDick VanGrunsven, a 1961 engineering graduate of the University of Portland, has pledged $30,000 to establish a new term professorship in the Shiley School of Engineering. Over the three-year term of the project, mechanical engineering professor Timothy Doughty will have the title “The Richard and Diane VanGrunsven Professor of Engineering.” With the VanGrunsven gift, Doughty will work to improve the quality and increase the number of co-curricular, hands-on, student/faculty projects conducted during summers in the Shiley School of Engineering.

VanGrunsven founded Van’s Aircraft, Inc., in 1972, primarily to sell plans and parts for the RV-3, a homebuilt aircraft he designed (the “RV” in each model number match his initials). He manufactured the company’s products himself in a small shop behind his house in Reedville, Oregon. As business grew and Van’s Aircraft began producing full aircraft kits and new designs, the company moved to larger quarters in North Plains, Oregon. In 2000 the company moved to a new 60,000-square-foot facility near the small town of Aurora, Oregon. The employee-owned company currently employs over 50 people and produces several hundred complete aircraft kits per year.
