Donations Needed for Nicaragua Silent Auction, Nov. 28-Dec. 2
Donations from faculty and staff have been the backbone of the success of the annual silent auction fundraiser for the Moreau Center’s Nicaragua Immersion service program. All faculty, staff, students, and UP friends are welcome to participate in the silent auction, either as a donor of items or a bidder. This year’s auction will take place from Monday, November 28 to Friday, December 2, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons main entrance hallway. Single items, gift baskets, tickets to events, signed books, weekends at vacation homes or timeshares, gift certificates to local restaurants, and UP merchandise are just some of the items that have been popular at the auction in the past. Donations can be brought to the Moreau Center any time during the workday from now through Wednesday, November 23.
Please contact Theresa McCreary at x7131 or mccreary@up.edu if you have any questions about the auction.
October Encounter With Christ Retreat: Palanca, Please
A group of 37 students will be attending the October Encounter with Christ Retreat along with 23 student leaders from October 28-30, according to Beth Barsotti, Campus Ministry. Faculty and staff are asked to consider writing a note (palanca) to students they may know on the retreat. This is an opportunity to encourage students and express appreciation for them outside the classroom. Each retreatant will receive an envelope of surprise palanca. Please do not discuss this concept with students to keep it a surprise.
A list of those going on the retreat, along with their majors, can be found at https://www1.up.edu/campusministry/palanca/. Please submit your palanca to the Campus Ministry office in St. Mary’s. Mark your envelope with “EWC Retreat—(student’s name)” and bring it by Thursday, October 27.
Please forward any questions to Barsotti at x7463 or barsotti@up.edu.
Annual Red Mass, Sept. 28: All are Invited
All members of the campus community are invited to attend the annual Red Mass on Wednesday, September 28, at 5:30 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. Red is a traditional color associated with the Holy Spirit, and the Red Mass is celebrated each fall to honor and invoke the gifts of the Holy Spirit on all those associated with the practice and administration of law, a custom dating back to the Middle Ages. The first Red Mass in the U.S. was celebrated in 1859.
Archbishop Alexander K. Sample (pictured) will be the principal celebrant and Fr. James Gallagher, C.S.C., Campus Ministry, will offer the homily.
The Red Mass is an ancient tradition in the Catholic Church, going back to medieval times, wherein the Holy Spirit is invoked at the beginning of the legal season to guide all those administer the law. The red vestments worn by the priests symbolize the Holy Spirit who descended on the Apostles in the form of tongues of fire on Pentecost and whose wisdom is implored to guide the Church and the Nation.
