Attention, Boys and Ghouls: HALLoween, Oct. 31

jackolanterndtFaculty, staff, and neighborhood families are invited to participate in the annual HALLoween trick-or-treating night in selected UP dorms on Monday, October 31, from 5 to 7 p.m. Children through sixth grade can trick-or-treat, a great way to celebrate Halloween in a safe and controlled environment. All children wishing to participate in HALLoween must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Picture ID is required upon check-in for all parents and guardians. There will be one check-in location, under a tent in front of the Chiles Center, and parking in the main lot. Everyone must check in at this location and receive a wristband to gain admittance to the residence halls.

Open School MAT Residency Program: Spread the Word to Your Students

pic-for-upbeat-adIn 2015, the School of Education launched the Open School Master of Arts in Teaching (OMAT) Residency Program at Open School East, a 7th-12th grade college preparatory and leadership alternative school in east Multnomah County. The OMAT program prioritizes the recruitment and development of aspiring teachers of color to better represent the diversity of local schools, but accepts applications from all pre-service educators with a calling to work with marginalized youth. Applications to begin the OMAT program in Summer 2017 are due by March 1, 2017. Faculty who know about students who are interested in entering the teaching profession and feel called to work with disconnected, struggling youth are asked to share information about this program with them.  For more information, please go to this link or contact Peter Thacker, education, at thacker@up.edu, or Anne Rasmussen, education, at rasmusse@up.edu.

Fields Hall Trivia Night: Friday, Nov. 4

fields-signFields Hall will present its signature event, the annual Trivia Night, a fundraiser for the Holy Cross Missions, on Friday, November 4, from 10 to 11:30 p.m., in the Pilot House. Faculty, staff, and students are advised to form their five-member teams early. It’s great fun and open to all members of the UP community. Prizes include Meal Points from Bon Appétit, gift certificates, and a study week package given by provost Tom Greene and Sr. Sue Bruno, residence life. There will be five game prizes including Holy Cross packages such as dessert at the president’s house with Fr. Mark Poorman, C.S.C.; a tour and history of the Bell Tower with Fr. Gerry Olinger, C.S.C., and Fr. Jim Gallagher, C.S.C., followed by dessert; a dessert extravaganza at Papa Haydn with Fr. John Donato, C.S.C., and Fr. Edwin Obermiller C.S.C.; and a spaghetti dinner with Sr. Sue Bruno.

Donations Needed for Nicaragua Silent Auction, Nov. 28-Dec. 2

nicaraguaDonations from faculty and staff have been the backbone of the success of the annual silent auction fundraiser for the Moreau Center’s Nicaragua Immersion service program. All faculty, staff, students, and UP friends are welcome to participate in the silent auction, either as a donor of items or a bidder. This year’s auction will take place from Monday, November 28 to Friday, December 2, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons main entrance hallway. Single items, gift baskets, tickets to events, signed books, weekends at vacation homes or timeshares, gift certificates to local restaurants, and UP merchandise are just some of the items that have been popular at the auction in the past. Donations can be brought to the Moreau Center any time during the workday from now through Wednesday, November 23.

Pilots Rowing Team Open House and Regatta, Oct. 30

rowingFaculty, staff, and students are invited to join the UP rowing team at their home race, the Portland Fall Classic Regatta and Open House on Sunday, October 30, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the Portland Boathouse on 1515 SE Water Avenue.

The Portland Boathouse is “next to” Omsi and under the Hawthorne Bridge. Follow exits  #300 from I-5 northbound or #300B from I-5 southbound.

The UP teams will be racing throughout the morning, and coffee and refreshments will be available to all Pilot fans at the team tent in the Festival Plaza.

PACE Information Night, Oct. 27

erika-murphy-copyPACE, the Pacific Alliance for Catholic Education, a program of the School of Education, is hosting an information meeting Thursday, October 27 at 7 p.m. in  Franz Hall Room 034.

PACE is a post-graduate teacher education program through the University of Portland in which candidates earn tuition-free graduate degrees in education while they serve as teachers in Catholic schools.  Over the course of three summers and two academic years, PACE teachers strengthen Catholic education while developing and refining the skills of successful educators.  The PACE program focuses on whole-person formation, with attention to Personal, Communal and Professional formation, informed by the charisms of Blessed Basil Moreau, C.S.C., and the Congregation of Holy Cross.

PACE is seeking faith-filled applicants (Catholic and non-Catholic) from all academic majors. Education majors pursue the M.Ed. in the graduate program, non-education majors pursue the M.A.T.

Scholars attend regular seminars and present their own research related to strengthening field education in social work.

Bob Butler, professor emeritus of environmental studies; Jenda Johnson, Earth Sciences Animated; and Nic Zentner, Central Washington University, published an animation titled “Ghost Forests: Evidence for a Giant Earthquake & Tsunami in the Pacific Northwest.” This animation explores how Native American oral history, geology of ghost forests in coastal Washington and Oregon, and written accounts of a tsunami that flooded Japanese Pacific Coast villages converge to document the most recent Cascadia subduction zone megathrust earthquake on January 26, 1700 at about 9 p.m. The Ghost Forest animation can be found on the IRIS website at: https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/animation/740 or on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xPbt8iiDRo&feature=youtu.be.
