The Pilots track and field team recently jumped to 20th in national NCAA ankings, as announced by the United State Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The jump came after a strong showing over the weekend that saw senior Woody Kincaid (pictured) claim the top national time in the 3,000 meters, while teammates Reid Buchanan, Nathan DeVaughn, and Jack Welch also performed well.

Recreational services is excited to announce that on Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to noon, children of students, faculty, and staff (5-17 years old) are allowed to use the gymnasium area of the Beauchamp Recreation Center. This opportunity for families to spend recreation time together with their children is available to those with membership to the Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center. To facilitate a safe environment for users of the facility, including children, please see the policies for the program on the Recreational Services website.

The athletics department would like to acknowledge this year’s winners of the “Difference Award.” Each year, student-athletes nominate a professor on campus who they felt has made a difference in their life. This year, three professors were selected as winners:

Make plans to join the Pilots men’s basketball team in the Chiles Center this week for two West Coast Conference games. First, the Pilots welcome San Francisco to The Bluff for a Thursday night game set to start at 7 p.m. This game will feature the most exciting 5-minute promotion of the year, as the Halftime Mile race is set to take place on the upper mezzanine during halftime. For the second home game of the week the Pilots will welcome Santa Clara to the Chiles Center for a Saturday Night game starting at 7 p.m. This game will be Mascot Night with Wally and all of his friends at the game to mingle with fans and play a halftime basketball game for the ages. Nick Carlin-Voigt has been hired as the new head coach for the Pilots men’s soccer team. Carlin-Voight comes to Portland from UCLA, where he was the associate head coach for the Bruins during the past four seasons. Carlin-Voigt was actively involved in all aspects of the UCLA soccer program, including player development, training, scouting, scheduling, soccer-specific fitness training, summer camp development and alumni and community outreach. As the academic liaison in 2013, he helped the Bruins claim the highest team grade-point average in the UCLA athletic department for first time in program history.
Prior to his stint at UCLA, Carlin-Voigt helped assemble three consecutive recruiting classes at George Mason that were ranked in the top 35. Before his coaching career, Carlin-Voigt was an NSCAA All-American at Kalamazoo College, where he was a regular on the Dean’s List and graduated cum laude with a degree in economics. Considered one of the top goalkeepers in Division III soccer, he was a two-time team captain for Kalamazoo and a four-year starter, and he holds the Kalamazoo record for shutouts and saves.

The Pilots women’s basketball team returns this week for two exciting West Coast Conference games. The first is on Thursday night when the Pilots take on Pacific at 7 p.m. On Saturday the Pilots will host Saint Mary’s at 1 p.m. Tickets for both games are on sale now. To purchase tickets, please visit the Pilots box office in the Chiles Center or call x7525.
Tickets for the big Pilot basketball game vs. Gonzaga go on sale on Monday, January 11, at 11 a.m., and the athletics team hopes to pack the Chiles Center with UP community members. Tickets will be available for purchase on Ticketmaster.com, in person at the Pilots box office, or over the phone by calling x7525. It is recommended that people try to use Ticketmaster.com for tickets, as they can help thousands of people at once.

The action starts on Thursday night with a game against University of San Diego. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m., and staff tickets are still available at 50 percent off on general admission through the Pilots box office. Then on Saturday night the action continues as the Pilots welcome Brigham Young University to the Chiles Center for a big West Coast Conference faceoff. Tip-off for this game is at 3 p.m. and once again staff can purchase GA tickets for 50 percent off at the Pilots box office.

Make plans to join in supporting the men’s basketball team tonight (Monday, December 21) as they take on Loyola Marymount in the Chiles Center. The men’s basketball team also plays on Wednesday night against Pepperdine, which will be aired live on ESPNU. Tip-off for both games is at 6 p.m. General admission tickets are two-for-one and all kids grade six and under are able to get free admission to both games.
Kids will also get free admission for the women’s game vs. Santa Clara on Thursday, December 31, at 4 p.m., and the women’s game vs. San Francisco on Saturday, January 2, at 2 p.m.

During Dead Week (Dec. 7-11), the Beauchamp Center is hosting a De-Stress Week for students, faculty, and staff. In addition to regularly scheduled fitness classes, staff are adding a series of activities aimed at rejuvenating mind, body, and spirit during what is typically a stressful time for the campus community. From guided meditation to lights out spin class, there’s something for everyone.
