Pilot Athletes Honored Again
The complete NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR) were released on Tuesday, June 11 and the University of Portland is once again among the national elite. All 15 Portland programs rated high on the scale and no teams are nearing any penalties. Among the four Division I universities in the state of Oregon, Portland posted the highest APR in 14 of the 15 sports in which it competes. Portland also recorded the highest APR in six West Coast Conference sponsored sports.
During the week of June 10 the West Coast Conference announced that the University of Portland was the winner of the 2012-2013 West Coast Conference REPRESENT Cup. The cup is awarded to the member institution that receives the greatest number of conference sportsmanship points during the academic year. The Pilots won the team sportsmanship award in four sports and received an extra point from the WCC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for their “Pilots Pals” program. For more information contact Jonathan Brooks, athletics, at 7431 or brooksj@up.edu.
New “University Report” Tool
A new online portal designed for faculty use in recording their scholarly activity was launched on Monday, May 20, according to John Orr, assistant to the provost. The goal of the tool is to provide members of the University community with one site that can be used to record and save their scholarly activity during the year. The data captured there will be used to populate the new and improved Provost’s University of Portland Report, which will now be published at the beginning of the fall semester.
Faculty should start loading scholarly activity for the past academic year as soon as possible in order to see their information appear in the fall report. Data will be sent to the marketing and communications office on Saturday, June 15, so please load materials before then.
Faculty members will find their personal, secure access to the portal on PilotsUP (https://pilots.up.edu) under the “Academic” tab. Hover over the Academic tab with your mouse and then click on “Scholarly Activity.” Instructions on how to use the portal appear in the left side bar. For assistance contact Orr at orr@up.edu or 7857, or Michele Leasor at leasor@up.edu or 7857.
New Help Desk Hours
In order to provide the most efficient, timely service to the University community, the help desk will be changing its hours of operation on July 1, according to Dan Sandaal, information services. The new hours of operation will be 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday throughout the entire calendar year, except for University holidays and closures. This change will allow more balanced staffing of both full-time and student employees, which will enable the help desk to better assist the University community and work with the other members of information services. For more information contact Sandaal at 7882 or sandaal@up.edu.
Pilot Teams Excel Academically
Seven University of Portland athletics teams have been honored for earning Public Recognition Awards based on their most recent multi-year academic progress rate (APR), the NCAA announced on Wednesday, June 5. Portland trails only Stanford in the Western United States for total number of teams earning recognition. The awards are given each year to teams with APRs in the top 10 percent in each sport. The University’s recognized programs included men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s indoor and outdoor track, women’s cross country, women’s indoor track, and women’s volleyball.
Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate, highlighting teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.

Campus Authors, Scholarly Activity Tool
The Clark Library will be using the publication data entered in the newly launched Scholarly Activity Tool to create the annual UP Authors Bibliography by the end of June. Previously library personnel gathered most of this information from the University Report that came out in May. Faculty are strongly encouraged to enter their publications in the new tool by June 15, so the data is available as library staff prepare for the Fifth Annual UP Authors Reception. David Alexander, 1957-2013
Biology professor David Alexander passed away on the evening of May 23, after a long battle with cancer. He had served the University community since 1995 by teaching classes and working on a number of campus committees. He will be missed. Please remember David and his family in your prayers.
