Apply For Sabbaticals by June 15
Applications for sabbaticals for the 2018-2019 academic year are due along with faculty development plans to faculty members’ respective deans by June 15, 2017. All materials including letter from the dean to the provost are due to the provost by September 1, 2017. Faculty eligible to apply for a sabbatical must have completed seven years of full-time teaching at the University of Portland, or have completed at a minimum an additional seven years of full-time teaching since a previously funded University of Portland sabbatical.
Sabbatical requests are coordinated with departmental planning as well as the individual faculty member’s annual development plan. With careful planning the academic units have been able to take into consideration the needs of both the individual faculty member and the department or school. Additional information about sabbatical leaves can be found on page 50 of the Faculty Handbook.

An Evening With Dr. Tom Greene, May 13
The Teacher Leadership Network and the School of Education will present “An Evening With Dr. Tom Greene” on Wednesday May 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., in the Terrace Room. All are invited to engage in a thought-provoking and inspiring evening with University provost Tom Greene, who rose through the ranks as a beloved and well-respected professor in the School of Education.

An Open Invitation
University president-elect Rev. Mark Poorman, C.S.C., invites the University community to nominate candidates for the University’s annual presentation of honorary doctorates. Such men and women have in a remarkable way encapsulated the University’s dedication to teaching and learning, faith and formation, and service and leadership in the classroom, residence halls, and the world, and are notable in their professions and/or communities for dedication, commitment, creativity, service, and the manner in which they have turned their talents to the common good.
Nominations should be sent to Tom Greene, provost, at greene@up.edu, preferably by the end of June. Names should be accompanied by a short explanation of the candidate’s life and work.
News From The Provost
The Digital Futures Task Force met twice this summer to get organized, determine some operating assumptions, and establish three sub-task forces. The work will continue this semester. The Task Force is charged with developing recommendations for UP regarding the future of technology, specifically as this relates to academics. The three subgroups are focused on: Academic Rigor and Regulations, Pedagogical Practices, and Infrastructure/Logistics. If you have comments or ideas about these matters, please send e-mails to Jim Ravelli or Tom Greene: greene@up.edu or ravelli@up.edu. Father Beauchamp established this task force in response to the enrollment management report completed last year.
A Transfer Work Group has been established to develop recommendations to enhance the process for the admission of transfer students. It needs to effective, efficient, and welcoming of transfer students. This initiative is a result of last year’s enrollment management report.
Degree Works will be available this fall for faculty and staff and it will be available to students during spring semester. This program should help with academic planning and advising and degree audits. Your feedback is welcomed as the rollout unfolds and training opportunities continue. See the Portal Announcement for additional information.
Four times this year, the provost and executive vice president will sponsor The Faculty Club from 4–5:30 p.m. Please save these dates: Tuesday, October 8; Tuesday, December 3; Tuesday, February 11; and Tuesday, April 22.
An informal working group focused on encouraging more undergraduate research at UP has been created, with John Orr serving as chair. If you would like to contribute, please contact Orr. Amelia Ahern-Rindell is working with the group in her capacity as president-elect of the Council on Undergraduate Education, a national association focused on the importance of undergraduate research.
If you would like to serve on the University Institutional Research Board, provost Tom Greene would love to know about it. He needs to appoint four faculty members to this critical and mandated committee. As the board will ideally need representation from engineering, business, and CAS (given the representation on the board) preference will be given in these areas. Please e-mail Greene at greene@up.edu to volunteer.
During the summer, the fire marshal established new occupancy sizes for each classroom. As a result, it modified the way classes were assigned for this semester. We must honor these capacities, so if your class does not fit into your room, please do not add furniture to your room, but contact the registrar’s office immediately and a room adjustment will be made.
For more information contact the provost’s office at 7105 or robb@up.edu.
Good Friday, Easter
University offices will be closed and no classes will be held on Friday, March 29, 2013, in observance of Good Friday, according to Tom Greene, provost. The closing actually begins at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 28; no classes should continue beyond that time, and other events, apart from those connected with the religious observance of Holy Week, should not be scheduled from that time through Monday, April 1. Even though classes are not scheduled for Easter Monday, offices will be open.
The early closing on Holy Thursday is intended to allow students, faculty, and staff to attend the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, which will be celebrated in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher at 4:30 p.m. The University’s custom of closing on Good Friday is in acknowledgment of the special religious character of the day. In Catholic tradition, Good Friday has always been recognized as one of three important days (the Sacred Triduum) of religious observance: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter. For more information contact the provost’s office at 7105 or robb@up.edu.
