Pilot women's basketball

New Women’s Basketball Coach: Michael Meek

Michael Meek has been hired as the new head coach for the Pilots women’s basketball team. Meek comes to Portland from George Fox University where we he was head coach for nine seasons.

Meek led the Bruins to remarkable results including NCAA Division III championship game appearances in 2012 and 2015. He guided George Fox to eight NCAA Tournament appearances – including the last six seasons – six Northwest Conference (NWC) championships, and his teams were ranked at the end of the year seven times.

With a career collegiate coaching record of 230-35 (.868), Meek ranks fourth in career winning percentage among active coaches with five-plus years of experience at all divisions of women’s college basketball. He was named the D3hoops.com NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year in 2012 and was three times named the NWC Coach of the Year, including in 2019. He coached four players to All-America recognition, while Hannah Munger also earned Academic All-America honors in 2012.

Pilot Women Play at Home, Jan. 24 & 26

Pilot fans are in for another huge week for Portland Basketball! The women’s team will have two WCC home games, first against Santa Clara on Thursday, January 24, at 7 p.m., and the next versus San Francisco on Saturday, January 26, at 2 p.m. This game will be our annual Mother-Daughter Postgame Clinic, with tips from the players and coaches following the game. Also, faculty, staff, and students with a UP ID can now receive happy hour pricing all day and every day at the North Portland Cha Cha Cha Mexican Taqueria.

Women’s Basketball Back at Home, Thursday & Saturday

The women are back in action this week as they look to score two home victories versus San Francisco and Pacific. The first game will take place this Thursday versus San Francisco. Women’s Basketball Returns Home Jan. 18, 20

Pilot fans, join us this week in cheering on our Pilots as they take on San Diego and LMU at home. The first game will take place on Thursday when the Pilots take on San Diego. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m. Come back on Saturday to cheer the Pilots on to victory as they take on LMU at 2 p.m.

Basketball Exhibition Games Take Center Stage at Chiles Center

pilotspMake plans to come out to the Chiles Center this week as the men’s and women’s basketball teams host exhibition games at the Chiles Center. The basketball action starts on Tuesday night as the women’s team takes the court at 7 p.m., taking on the Willamette University Bearcats. Then on Friday night the men’s team takes the court against the Evergreen State College Geoducks at 7 p.m. The basketball action concludes on Saturday night at 5 p.m. as the women’s basketball team once again takes the court versus Warner Pacific.

Tickets for these exhibition games are on sale now and can be purchased at the Pilots Box Office in person or by calling x7525.

Pilot Women’s Final Two Home Games This Week

wbx4The Pilots women’s basketball team returns home this week for their final two home games of the season. The Pilots will open the two game home series on Thursday as they take on Pacific at 7 p.m. The action continues on Saturday as the Pilots host Saint Mary’s on Senior Night with a 7 p.m. tip-off.

Cheryl Sorenson Named New Women’s Basketball Head Coach

Sorensen_new_coachCheryl Sorenson, a Portland native who has spent the past three years on The Bluff as an assistant coach, has been named head coach of the University of Portland women’s basketball program. Sorenson replaces long-time head coach Jim Sollars, who retired after 28 years at the helm of the Pilots. She is the fifth head coach in the program’s 34-year history. Pilot Women Home Games

womensbballThe women’s basketball team stays in town this week for two games. The first is on Thursday at 7 p.m., vs. Loyola Marymount. The second game is on Saturday at 2 p.m., vs. Pepperdine. The Saturday game is Breast Cancer Awareness Day and Women in Sports Day, and will feature a Pink Voodoo Doughnut giveaway and a post-game Mother-Daughter Clinic. Come out and cheer on the Pilots as they battle for their position in the WCC tournament. For tickets, please visit the Pilots Box Office. Pilots Basketball Over Break

pilots story The Pilots men’s and women’s basketball teams will play a combined eight games over winter break at the Chiles Center. Many of these games will have special ticket deals that feature a 2-for-1 adult ticket, buy one ticket at regular price and receive a second ticket for free, and free tickets for all kids in 6th grade and under. These ticket deals are good for the men’s games against San Francisco on December 28, Santa Clara on December 30, Pacific on January 2, and Saint Mary’s on January 4. Women’s games will be UP versus Cal Poly on December 18, Gonzaga on January 3, and San Diego on January 8. To take advantage of these ticket specials, please visit the Pilots Box Office on the day of the game. The eighth home game over break will feature the Pilots men’s basketball team versus Gonzaga; ticket for this game are on sale now and can be purchased at the Pilots Box Office.

Sweet Deals on Holiday Home Basketball Games

womens_basketball HolidaysAll faculty and staff are encouraged to attend Pilot men and women home basketball games over the holiday break. As a special offer to celebrate the holiday season, all faculty and staff who present their UP ID can get two general admission tickets for free, and all kids sixth grade and under are free. This offer is good for the following men’s basketball games:

  • December 28 vs. San Francisco at 7 p.m.
  • December 30 vs. Santa Clara at 3 p.m.
  • January 2 vs. Pacific at 7 p.m.
  • January 4 vs. St. Mary’s at 7 p.m.

Faculty and staff can get the same deal at the following women’s basketball games:

  • January 3 vs. Gonzaga at 7 p.m.
  • January 8 vs. San Diego at 7 p.m.
