Fire Alarm Testing Schedule

January 3, 2014

hAs a part of ongoing efforts in fire safety and alarm monitoring, the public safety office will have a vendor on campus over the next 4 weeks conducting annual fire alarm testing. Below is the schedule for the buildings to be tested:

  • Jan. 6: Bauccio Commons and Pilot House
  • Jan. 7: Mehling Hall and Orrico Hall
  • Jan. 8: Fields and Schoenfeldt Hall.

During this time there will be work crews testing each device in the assigned building, and there will be short audible tests conducted on the system. Staff are not required to leave during this time, but if for some reason the alarm is prolonged during this time period, please leave the building and organize outside the building until given the “all clear” to re-enter. For more information contact public safety at 7161 or publicsafety@up.edu.

New Wellness Center To Honor Fr. Beauchamp

December 16, 2013

BeauchampWellness copy

A new Recreation & Wellness Center, set to break ground in May 2014, will be named in recognition of University of Portland president Rev. E. William Beauchamp, C.S.C. The announcement was made during the University’s annual Christmas gala on Friday, December 13.

Earlier this year, Fr. Beauchamp announced he is stepping down as president at the end of the 2013-14 academic year. The University’s president since 2003, he has been a strong supporter of the new center, expected to be completed by May, 2015. The Beauchamp Center will be located on what is now a parking lot at the corner of North Portsmouth and Strong avenues.

The Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center is estimated to cost $23 million, with $20 million raised as of today. The building is expected to become a dynamic focal point on campus, and enhance the physical and mental health of students, faculty, and staff. Designs call for a new, modern facility, which will feature state-of-the-art equipment and space to accommodate the growing University community.

Gifts made to the Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center are included in the University’s RISE Campaign, which was announced in December 2010 and seeks to raise $175 million by 2014. The RISE Campaign, which has raised more than $165 million to date, is one of the largest development campaigns ever for a Pacific Northwest private college or university.

The San Francisco office of 360 Architecture and Portland-based Soderstrom Architects are finalizing the design of the building.  Renderings of the proposed building can be found at this link.

Proposed rooms for the building include the Fitness Center with cardio machines, strength and free-weight stations, and areas for health and wellness testing and counseling. The gymnasium will include three courts for basketball, volleyball, and floor hockey. An indoor track will be suspended above the gym and will hold three lanes for walking and jogging, as well as pace clocks and stretching areas. The new Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center will also have two exercise studios, a spinning studio, an Outdoor Pursuits Center, and a 32-foot rock-climbing wall.

For more information contact the development office at 7395 or webmaster@up.edu.

Personal Mail Window Hours

December 13, 2013

packagesMailing services in Buckley Center is a service for University departments and students and it is a very busy operation throughout the year. It is not a commercial mailing center or a post office, and it does not receive extra staffing for the holiday season. In order to keep University-related mail operations running smoothly during the holidays, mailing services will be open for employees’ personal mail needs from 12 noon to 1 p.m., Monday-Friday from now through Monday, December 23, according to Mary Scroggins, mailing services. The window will be open for letters, packages, and stamp purchases. All packages must be boxed, taped, and addressed, and envelopes must be addressed and sealed. The mail center is unable to provide boxes or shipping supplies.

Personal packages for faculty and staff should also not be mailed to the University. Processing personal packages places a great deal of strain on mailing services staff, to the detriment of providing service for University offices and students. If you will not be home and are worried about theft, please send items to a friend or family member that will be home to accept the package in your absence. For more information contact Scroggins at 7179 or scroggin@up.edu.
