Physical Plant Staff Changes
The physical plant has made some changes in the staff of their carpentry shop, according to director André Hutchinson.
Dave Doe (pictured) has been reassigned so that he can devote his time to special carpentry projects. Evidence of Dave’s considerable talent and craftsmanship can be found throughout campus; recent examples include furniture in many of the dormitory chapels, the Saint John’s Bible display case in the Clark Library, and new podiums for formal university events and ceremonies.
Bret Sorg will move to the carpentry foreman role. He has extensive experience as a finish carpenter and commercial fixture installer, and was introduced to the construction trades by his grandfather, who was a carpenter in Germany.
Brian Tatro has also been hired as a staff carpenter. He joins the team with more than 22 years’ experience as a carpenter and foreman with Todd Construction.
For more information contact Hutchinson at 7306 or hutchina@up.edu.
What’s That Smell?
Faculty and staff are reminded to take notice of the beauty all around them this summer; some of the summer blooming plants you will see (and smell) include:
- Harlequin Glorybower (pictured): Late summer blooms grace this tree near the library, Franz Hall, and the walkway by the baseball stadium. You can smell its perfume-like fragrance from blocks away.
- Goldenrain tree: Flower clusters from the summer turn into papery fruit capsules that resemble Japanese lanterns and persist all winter. You can find them near Buckley Center Auditorium.
- Ground cover roses, shrub roses: Pink “flower carpet” roses bloom all summer in front of the Chiles Center sign; pink and white Meidiland (pronounced May-de-land) roses bloom around Franz Hall and along the road that goes by the health center.
- In 1982, the estate of William Ingram of Salem donated many mature Camellias to the University, including several large C. Sasanquas, which can be seen blooming from early winter through early spring. Several are located on the east side of Howard Hall.
For further information contact Michele Zimmerman, physical plant, as she makes her rounds of campus flora, or Jim Haines, as he does the same.

Campus Security Tips
Public safety director Gerald Gregg and physical plant director André Hutchinson have asked campus personnel to keep a few tips in mind to improve overall campus security:
- Master keys should be kept inside a locked office or secure area and should never be taken home or removed from campus.
- University issued building keys should be kept on a generic key ring without any attachments identifying a UP connection.
- UP ID cards should never be clipped or attached to key rings.
- University issued building keys should never be swapped or transferred among faculty or staff, even within the same department.
- All keys are issued to specific individuals; any changes/transfers should be coordinated through the locksmith shop.
For more information contact public safety at 7161.
New Locksmith Hired
David Bachman has been hired as the new University locksmith, according to physical plant director Andre Hutchinson. Bachman most recently worked at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) as lead locksmith, where he was responsible for access controls for more than 40 buildings. All requests for new or replacement keys should continue to be submitted to public safety, but all key issuance and returns will be coordinated with the locksmith shop in the physical plant during normal business hours, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or by appointment.
