All faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend a free screening of the documentary “Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago” on Wednesday, January 29, at 7 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons. The screening is open to the public. This multiple award winning film has been selling out screenings around the world. It concerns six strangers as they attempt to walk 500 miles across Spain, using the famous pilgrim path. The movie will be followed by a panel discussion with Kate Regan, international languages and cultures, and director and producer Lydia B. Smith. CISGO Seed Grant Recipients
The Collaborative for International Studies and Global Outreach (CISGO) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2013-2014 CISGO Seed Grants, according to Kate Regan, international languages and cultures. CISGO Seed Grant Applications
The Collaborative in International Studies and Global Outreach (CISGO) invites University of Portland faculty, staff, and students to submit applications for seed grants to begin projects directly related to international learning, teaching, research, and service. Applicants may ask for a maximum of $500. The purpose of the grants will be to support work that will ultimately increase international awareness and inter-cultural competency at the University of Portland and beyond.

Art Conservation Lecture
William Wei, senior conservation scientist at the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands, will speak on campus on Wednesday, October 23, from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m., in Buckley Center room 314, according to Kate Regan, international languages and cultures. His talk, “The Art, Ethics, and Science of Art Conservation,” will present examples of research conducted at the Cultural Heritage Agency of The Netherlands and will discuss the interplay between conservation science, art history, and conservation ethics in restoring works of art. Internationalization Forum
The collaboratives for International Studies and Global Outreach and Teaching and Learning invite all faculty and staff to the Forum on Comprehensive Internationalization on Saturday, September 14, from 9 a.m. to noon, in the board room of Baccio Commons. There will be three panels that will address comprehensive internationalization initiatives, including internationalizing the curriculum, course opportunities, and overseas experiences. New International Film Series
The Collaborative for International Studies and Global Outreach (CISGO) is pleased to announce the first International film series on campus that will begin this semester, 2013, and continue into spring semester, 2014. Filmmakers from Portland, including faculty and staff from UP, will screen their works related to international travel and research. The first screening will be on Thursday, September 12, from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. Kate Regan (pictured), international languages and cultures, will screen her latest film, “Trekking with Quijote.” Courtney Vail Fletcher, communication studies, and Jeff Kennel, marketing and communications, will screen their film on Nicaragua in November. 2013 Faculty Awards
The University’s 2013 Faculty Awards were presented on Tuesday, May 7, at the Faculty Awards Dinner, with the following results:
The James Culligan Award, established in 1953 in memory of a dedicated servant of the University and presented annually to a faculty member in recognition of distinguished service, was presented to John Orr, English, who also serves as assistant to the provost, and director of honors and fellowships and grants. Winners of the Culligan Award wear the medal with their academic regalia, as a sign of the University’s highest faculty honor.
The Deans’ Award for Faculty Leadership, presented annually to a tenured faculty member who exemplifies, in an extraordinary way, the qualities of teaching and scholarship described in the University’s Articles of Administration for appointment, advancement in rank, and tenure, was presented to the effervescent, exuberant, and ebullient Kate Regan, Spanish professor extraordinaire with the international languages and cultures department.
The Outstanding Teaching Award, presented annually by the University’s Committee on Teaching and Scholarship to a faculty member who is a particular exemplar of the University’s commitment to superb teaching, was presented to Lars Erik Larson of the English department.
The Outstanding Scholarship Award, presented annually by the University’s Committee on Teaching and Scholarship to a faculty member who presents unusually significant and meritorious achievement in professional scholarship during the past two academic years, and whose work substantively enhances the effectiveness of his or her classroom teaching, was presented to the incomparable team of Steve Kolmes, biology and environmental science, and Russell Butkus, theology.
