“Whimsy and Humor in The Saint John’s Bible,” Feb. 17
Fr. Eric Hollas, OSB, of St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn., will offer a lecture entitled “Humor and Whimsy in The Saint John’s Bible” on Tuesday, February 17, at 7:15 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons board room. In addition to shedding new light on the genesis of The Saint John’s Bible, Fr. Hollas will highlight the many visual puns and quirkiness in the art of the first fully hand-rendered Bible manuscript crafted in over 500 years.
This lecture is part of the Beckman Humor Project, and is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served at the lecture and also at the 6:30 p.m. reception in Buckley Center Gallery that officially kicks off the display of 10 large prints from the project.
The talk is sponsored by the Garaventa Center. For more information, contact Karen Eifler at 8014 or eifler@up.edu.
Confronting “Invisible Suffering” On Campus, Feb. 18
Depression, mental illness, thoughts of suicide, and self-harm are real demons confronting members of the UP community and those they love and live with. The Garaventa Center has partnered with ASUP to begin to dilute the stigma of talking about them. They will offer a panel presentation and facilitate discussion on Wednesday, February 18, at 7 p.m., in the Holy Cross Lounge on the third floor of Franz Hall. All campus community members are invited.
Paul Myers, Norah Martin, Rev. John Donato, CSC, Kristina Houck, and students Erin Kirkelie and Mariah Wildgen will identify warning signs, how to tap into pastoral and health resources, and the importance of seeing mental healch in the context of the University’s shared Holy Cross mission.
Ash Wednesday was chosen deliberately for this event, as it marks the beginning of Lent, a time to enter into solidarity with those who suffer, even if their burdens are not apparent to untrained eyes. Refreshments will be provided.

TLC Tool of the Week: Facework
As midterms and projects and other major student products are well underway, professors may feel a tension between maintaining positive, upbeat interactions with students and the need to provide them with honest feedback on their performance. In this brief video featuring Jeff Kerssen-Griep, communication studies, faculty can learn three specific strategies for communicating accurate, constructive feedback to students, even when the news isn’t what they were hoping for. It takes the duration of a cup of coffee to view the video, and faculty can enjoy that coffee compliments of the Teaching and Learning Collaborative and the associate provost.

Teaching Tip From the TLC
For faculty who are teaching online or hybrid courses, this week’s TLC tip may be especially helpful. It’s a video in which engineering faculty member Niki Schulz demonstrates how to use a document camera (e.g. an ELMO) together with WebEx to be able to draw, calculate, and make thinking visible through real-time scribbling while teaching. Use your coffee card, courtesy of the associate provost and Bon Appetit, to fill a cup and acquire a new teaching skill in the length of time it takes to get to the last drop. Need a new coffee card? Karen Eifler, Garaventa Center, still has a few to give out. Contact her at eifler@up.edu.
TLC from the TLC
This week’s teaching resource is about the Virtual Learning Center. Academic Technology Services has put dozens of well-indexed, brief instructional videos for subjects including online tutorials, workshops, webinars and online courses that cover every technological tool available to support excellent teaching. Use your coffee coupon and take ten minutes to scroll through the offerings.
For more information on VLC, please contact Sam Williams (williasa@up.edu); for coffee coupons or information about the Teaching & Learning Collaborative, contact Karen Eifler (eifler@up.edu).
Bringing Eyes of Faith To Film: “The Lego Movie,” Feb. 3
The Bringing Eyes of Faith to Film Series will present “The Lego Movie” on Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 7:15 p.m., in Franz Hall room 223. Enjoy movie snacks and hear Karen Eifler and Fr. Charlie Gordon, C.S.C., use the series to illuminate unexpected themes of grace and transcendence in popular contemporary movies. For further information, please contact Karen Eifler at eifler@up.edu or 8014.
TLC From the TLC
This week’s teaching resource is a collection of how-to videos for everything from creating voiceovers for lecture notes to getting the most out of personal websites. The University’s Lynda.com is chock-full of digital resources for teaching, with videos ranging from a few minutes to several hours, and is available from the Go Media single sign-in portal. This link leads to the Lynda.com welcome page.
The Teaching & Learning Collaborative encourages faculty to scroll through the contents over a cup of coffee (compliments of the associate provost and the TLC) and see the online tutorials that are waiting to assist them. Those who are wondering where their coupon for a free Bon Appetit beverage is, please contact Karen Eifler, Garaventa Center, at eifler@up.edu.
