Garaventa Center co-directors Karen Eifler and Fr. Charlie Gordon, C.S.C., will celebrate 10 years of their Bringing Eyes of Faith to Film series with a free showing of Groundhog Day at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19, in Shiley Hall room 301. Enjoy themed movie snacks as Eifler and Fr. Charlie unpack surprising themes of grace and transcendence in this comedic classic.

This year’s feature is “Warm Bodies,” and Karen Eifler and Fr. Charlie Gordon of the Garaventa Center will precede the free screening by helping break open themes of grace, redemption, and transcendence in surprising places. Move-themed snacks will be provided.

The Bringing Eyes of Faith to Film series will feature a free screening of “DamNation,” a SXSW prize winning eco-issue documentary sponsored by clothing company Patagonia. Fr. Charlie Gordon, C.S.C., and Karen Eifler, Garaventa Center, will lead a discussion of Pope Francis’s compelling encyclical Laudato Si on humans’ responsibility to the environment prior to the screening on Wednesday, October 14, at 7:15 p.m., in Franz Hall room 120. The even is free and open to faculty, staff, students, and the public, and movie snacks will be provided.

Bringing Eyes of Faith to Film: “Argo,” Nov. 20

argoThe next Bringing Eyes of Faith to Film movie will be “Argo” on Wednesday, November 20, beginning at 7:15 p.m., in Shiley Hall room 319. The screening is free and open to all; movie-themed snacks will be provided. In this popular series, hosts Karen Eifler and Fr. Charlie Gordon, C.S.C., illuminate unexpected themes of grace and redemption in popular contemporary movies. In the 2012 film “Argo,” based on a declassified true story, a CIA agent acts under the cover of a Hollywood producer scouting a location for a science fiction movie in an attempt to rescue six Americans in Tehran during the U.S. hostage crisis in Iran in 1980. “Argo” won the 2012 Academy Award for Best Picture. Bob Butler, professor emeritus of environmental studies; Jenda Johnson, Earth Sciences Animated; and Nic Zentner, Central Washington University, published an animation titled “Ghost Forests: Evidence for a Giant Earthquake & Tsunami in the Pacific Northwest.” This animation explores how Native American oral history, geology of ghost forests in coastal Washington and Oregon, and written accounts of a tsunami that flooded Japanese Pacific Coast villages converge to document the most recent Cascadia subduction zone megathrust earthquake on January 26, 1700 at about 9 p.m. The Ghost Forest animation can be found on the IRIS website at: https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/animation/740 or on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xPbt8iiDRo&feature=youtu.be.
