Visio Divina Offers A Peaceful Pause

All are invited to step out of the storm and into the quiet of Visio Divina on Wednesday, March 25, at 12:45 p.m. and 7:15 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. This gently guided contemplative prayer will focus on the illumination of the raising of Lazarus from The Saint John’s Bible, and offers participants a chance for their own silent reflection. Each session takes about 30 minutes; all members of the UP community are welcome to participate.

Bringing Eyes of Faith To Film: “Guardians of the Galaxy”

On Wednesday evening, March 18, Garaventa Center co-directors Karen Eifler and Fr. Charlie Gordon, C.S.C., will host Bringing Eyes of Faith to Film, with themes of grace and transcendence highlighted in the popular movie “Guardians of the Galaxy.” The event, which is free and open to all, begins at 7:15 p.m. in Franz Hall room 214, and movie snacks will be provided. Come To Thirst Friday, March 20

All faculty and staff are invited to enjoy snacks and quaffs of many sorts this Friday, March 20, in the Garaventa Center on the third floor of Franz Hall. Maybe it’s getting through the first week after break, maybe it’s a new publication, or maybe it’s just the pleasure of one another’s agenda-free company; whatever the reason to celebrate or commiserate, stop by any time between 4 and 6 p.m. It’s the final Thirst Friday for this year.

“I’ll Push You,” March 19

The Garaventa Center will host “I’ll Push You,” the story of two friends completing the 500-mile El Camino de Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage across northern Spain, on Thursday, March 19, at 7:15 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons board room. The event is free and open to all. With one of the men confined to a wheelchair, it took the efforts of his best friend, along with the help of strangers (including Schoenfeldt Hall director Joe Coulter) to complete the six-week trip.

TLC Resource Of The Week

As the race toward the end of the term accelerates, the Teaching and Learning Collaborative encourages faculty to take a look at this brief article on “Moving From Multi-tasking to Mindfulness,” in which professor Kristin Rousch describes how to help students focus their attention rather than fracture it. The article provides several specific strategies to use in classes from nearly any academic discipline, as well as a cogent rationale for weaning students away from their fragmented approaches to cognitive tasks. All this can be gleaned from an article that takes as long to read as it does to sip a cup of tea…mindfully, of course.

This Week’s “Visio Divina”

Visio Divina, a contemplative Lenten prayer, will be held twice on Wednesday, March 18, at 12:45 p.m. and 7:15 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. The meditative prayer lasts approximately 30 minutes and focuses on an image from The Saint John’s Bible. The volume containing the focal image for that week will be available for participants to explore before and after the prayer. Visio Divina is sponsored by Campus Ministry and the Garaventa Center.

“Catch UP” With Accessibility, Accommodations Requirements

The TLC resource of the week for March 2-8 will be Catch UP Sessions offered by the students with disabilities office, a key partner in the Teaching and Learning Collaborative. Catch UP is a series of workshops for faculty and staff to help them “Catch UP” by answering questions about accommodations and providing simple tips for incorporating accessibility into course materials. The Catch UP series will take place on Tuesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in the Franz Hall Murphy Room, on the following dates: March 3 (on Confidentiality, Safety Plans and Note-Taking), 17 (on Exacerbation of Condition and the 30% Absence Limit), 24 (on Defining Accessibility for Course Materials) and 31 (on Exam accommodations). All attendees at each session will receive a coupon for a free cup of coffee.

Lenten Visio Divina

All staff and faculty are invited to engage in Visio Divina on Wednesdays during Lent. To accommodate varied schedules, there will be two sessions offered, at 12:45 and 7:15 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. In the frenetic pace of most of our days, Visio Divina is a chance to step into quiet contemplative individual reflection centered on an image from The Saint John’s Bible, a different one each week. Each session lasts about 30 minutes.

Pre-Show Panel, Reception for “Full Circle,” Feb. 27

Prior to the Friday, February 27 performance of Full Circle, all ticket holders are invited to enjoy complimentary wine and cheese while listening to a panel of campus experts, including Mead Hunter, performing and fine arts; Brian Els, history; and Rev. Charlie Gordon, C.S.C., theology, as they highlight production details and illuminate important themes in the play. The panel and reception begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Mago Hunt Center lobby.
