Home Buying Basics Brown Bag, Dec. 5

for saleThe University will host the Portland Housing Center (PHC) for a brown bag discussion on home buying basics on Thursday, December 5, from noon to 1 p.m., in Buckley Center room 163. The PHC is a local non-profit committed to sustainable home ownership. The topics will include educational resources on preparing yourself for home ownership, where to find financial resources, current classes and programs, and more. Tuition Remission Due Nov. 15

please_note-283x300Faculty and staff applications for tuition remission are now accepted via online forms only and can be accessed through the HR website at www.up.edu/hr/, according to HR director Bryn Sopko. In addition to this easier access, HR has updated the application dates for remission to match the deadline in student accounts, so please keep these dates in mind:

  • Spring term: November 15
  • Summer term: April 5
  • Fall term: July 1

Please note that there are separate tuition remission application forms for undergraduate and graduate course work, and that any graduate level tuition remission benefits will be taxable to the employee on the value above $5,250 for attempted credits and subject to applicable withholdings, and will be reflected on the W-2 form of the tax year the remission was applied. A summary on tuition remission and links to the online forms are available here. For more information contact human resources at 7461 or hr@up.edu.

Tuition Remission Deadline

tuition remission Aug5Employees are reminded that fall 2013 tuition remission should be applied for as soon as possible in order to avoid late charges on students’ accounts, according to Bryn Sopko, human resources.

There is a separate application form for undergraduate course work (http://tinyurl.com/42haqs2) and graduate courses (http://tinyurl.com/7sx5zs8). A tuition remission summary is also available on the HR website at http://tinyurl.com/c8f6j2x.

New 100 Best Workplaces Survey

Employees have received surveys through their e-mail accounts, according to Bryn Sopko, human resources. The survey will run from Monday June 10 to Friday, June 21. Don’t Be Remiss

Faculty and staff applications for tuition remission will only be accepted via online forms and can be accessed through the HR website at www.up.edu/hr/, according to HR director Bryn Sopko. The HR office will no longer accept paper forms. In addition to this easier access, HR has updated the application dates for remission to match the deadline in student accounts, so please keep these dates in mind:

  • Spring term: November 15
  • Summer term: April 5
  • Fall term: July 1.

Since the April 5 deadline for summer tuition has passed, please submit remission forms as soon as possible.

Please also note that there are separate tuition remission application forms for undergraduate and graduate course work, and that any graduate level tuition remission benefits will be taxable to the employee on the value above $5,250 for attempted credits and subject to applicable withholdings, and will be reflected on the W-2 form of the tax year the remission was applied. Eligible employees who intend to use their tuition remission benefit during the summer semester are encouraged to apply using the online request tool no later than Friday, April 5, according to Bryn Sopko, human resources. It is required that remission requests are approved at least 2 weeks before the first class, or late charges may be applied to an employee’s account.

There are separate application forms for undergraduate (http://tinyurl.com/42haqs2) and graduate course work tuition remission (http://tinyurl.com/7sx5zs8). Any graduate level tuition remission benefit will be taxable to the employee on the value above $5,250 for attempted credits and subject to applicable withholdings and will be reflected on the W2 of the tax year the remission was applied. Time away from an employee’s regular work day must be approved in advance by the supervisor. Tuition exchange at other universities is not available to employees. An American Dream—an opera by librettist/Portland Magazine editor, Jessica Murphy Moo, and composer Jack Perla—was produced by OperaLab Japan in Tokyo (November 2024) and Manhattan School of Music (December 2024).  

Larry Larsen, Performing and Fine Arts, designed the scenery for this year’s production of Nordic Fire for the Portland Revels that is playing at the Alberta Abbey from December 13 through December 22.  He also is designing the lighting for Lakewood Theatre Company’s production of The Maltese Falcon based on the novel by Dashiell Hammett, which plays at the Lakewood Center in Lake Oswego from January 3 through February 9.

Lizhong Hao, Business, presented “The Impact of Auditor and Client Bargaining Power on Audit Pricing: A Two-Tier Stochastic Frontier Approach.” The 2024 Corporate Behavior and New Development of Financial Markets International Conference. Chongqing, China. November, 2024.

Simon Aihiokhai, Theology, was a discussant and participant at the International Congress on the Future of Theology ‘Legacy and Envisioning.’ Organized by the Dicastery for Culture and Education. Vatican City. December 9–10, 2024. Aihiokhai was also a discussant and participant at the General Assembly of the International Network of Societies for Catholic Theology (INSeCT). Rome, Italy. December 8 – 13, 2024.

Dave Houglum, Director of Leadership Studies and Leadership Professor of Practice, Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, completed the training requirements to be certified in the DiSC assessment on December 19, 2024. The DiSC assessment is a powerful tool that helps individuals and teams improve communication, collaboration, and workplace dynamics by providing insights into behavioral and communication styles.
