Andrew Golla, performing and fine arts, will direct “Boeing Boeing” by Marc Camoletti with performances on October 3-7 at 7:30 p.m. (2 p.m. Sunday) in Mago Hunt Center Theater. University Singers & Women’s Chorale Concert, Oct. 6
The University Singers will open their concert season with Shall We Gather At The River, featuring selections from a wide-ranging repertoire, including the music of Copland, Schubert, Gjeilo, Thompson. and others. The concert takes place on Saturday, October 6, at 3 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The Women’s Chorale will perform selections to haunt and inspire; from Paul Neal’s intense arrangement of Mendelssohn and Hölty’s Hexenlied (Witches Song), to Abbie Betinis’ gorgeous cannon, Be Like the Bird and René Clausen’s All That Hath Life and Breath Praise Ye The Lord!

Music at Midweek: Andreas Klein, Oct. 3
The next Music at Midweek performance will feature world renowned pianist Andreas Klein on Wednesday, October 3, at 12:30 p.m., in Mago Hunt Center Recital Hall. His performance is free and open to all.
Klein studied at the Julliard School and has toured Europe, the Middle East, and the USA, appearing on major concert series in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington DC, Cleveland, Houston, and Seattle, to name a few. He is widely admired as a pianist of rare sensitivity and musicality. The Washington Post has praised his “articulate and flowing pianism” while the New York Times called him “a pianist who makes silences sound like music.”

Music at Midweek for Sept. 5: Portlandia Brass Ensemble

Faculty & Staff Discount for “The Light in the Piazza,” June 21
The performing and fine arts department is offering a discounted performance of Mock’s Crest Productions’ “The Light in the Piazza” on Thursday, June 21. Faculty and staff members can buy tickets for $16 by presenting a UP ID at the box office, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., M–F, or call x7287 to reserve.
“The Light in the Piazza” is a contemporary musical operetta with a book by Craig Lucas and music and lyrics by Adam Guettel. The story is based on a 1962 film about a mother and daughter on a journey of self-discovery and finding true love in the streets of Florence. The music broke with the standard Broadway pop tradition and ventured into neoromantic classical music for which it won a Tony Award in 2005.

University Orchestra Concert: Premier Performances, April 24
The University Orchestra will present Premier Performances on Tuesday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. Admission is free and all are welcome. The performance will feature debut guest soloist performances by UP seniors Catherine Jacobs, David Rogers, and Maddie Tran. Jacobs and Tran will sing arias by Handel, Mozart, Donizetti, and Bellini. Rogers will perform the first movement of Mozart’s bassoon concerto. The concert will also feature the premiere performance of “Portland,” written for the UP Orchestra and the city of Portland by composer Erich Stem. Two of the most definitive finales ever written will round out the program with the fourth movement of Dvořák’s “New World” symphony, and the third and fourth movements of Beethoven’s monumental Fifth Symphony.

Women’s Chorale Concert: Treble Night, April 25
The UP Women’s Chorale will be joined by other treble choirs from Clark College, Marylhurst University, Lindfield College, and the women of the University Singers as they celebrate the beauty of the treble voice on Wednesday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to all.
The Women’s Chorale will perform the heartbreaking Largo from Dvořák’s New World Symphony, Nancy Grundahl’s energetic arrangement of Followers of the Lamb, and Moira Smiley’s body percussive take on Bring Me Little Water, Silvy. Each choir will perform their own set, and in a stunning finale, 100 women will join together to sing Warrior by Kim Baryluk and Gwyneth Walker’s This Morning aka Hey Girl.

The performing and fine arts department will welcome internationally-renowned composer Jake Runestad to campus for a presentation of his music and career as part of the Music at Midweek series on Wednesday, April 18, 12:30 to 1:25 p.m., in Mago Hunt Recital Hall. His free presentation is open to all.
Considered a “choral rockstar” by American Public Media, Runestad is one of the most frequently performed and commissioned composers of choral music in the world, having “a particular knack for marrying powerful music to texts that speak to some of the most pressing and moving issues of our time” (Star Tribune). His music has been hailed as “highly imaginative” by the Baltimore Sun, and “stirring and uplifting” by the Miami Herald. With a belief that music has the power to initiate positive change, Runestad creates musical works that are socially conscious and explore authentic human emotions and experiences.
The Choral Arts Ensemble of Portland (conducted by David De Lyser, performing and fine arts) and the Linn-Benton Community College Chamber Choir will be performing an evening of Runestad’s music under his direction on Saturday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m., in the Agnes Flanagan Chapel at Lewis & Clark College. Moliere’s “Tartuffe” Opens April 13
The performing and fine arts department will present Tartuffe by Moliere, directed by Gregory Pulver, from April 13-15 and 19-21, in Mago Hunt Center Theater. Showtime is 7:30 p.m., except Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the Hunt Center Box Office at x7287 or magohuntboxoffice@up.edu. One of Moliere’s most famous and influential theatrical comedies, Tartuffe was first performed in 1664, and many of its characters are considered among the greatest classical theatre roles.

54th Annual UP Jazz Festival, April 11-12
The University of Portland’s 54th Annual Jazz Festival takes place April 11 and 12 as bands from all over the region come together to perform and express their love of jazz music.
The festival showcases excellent student musicians as well as guest artists from around the nation, all contributing to a vibrant festival of jazz and the celebration of music performance and education on campus. Since it began, the Festival has grown in size every year, becoming known as a premier student jazz event in the Pacific Northwest.
For the first time in the 54 years of the Jazz Festival at UP, students will participate in an Oregon Music Educators Association (OMEA) Jazz Festival, which is a qualifier for state championships here at UP. Throughout the two days, there will be twenty-two middle school and high school bands performing, each band consisting of sixteen to eighteen musicians. In addition to this, the UP Jazz Ensemble will perform both days.
This year’s featured artist is trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, who was born in Vancouver and raised in Nanaimo, British Columbia. She graduated from Berklee College of Music. She has appeared on “Saturday Night Live,” performed with Grammy winner Terri-Lyne Carrington, and recorded with Sarah McLachlan. On top of all this, she also leads her own quintet, quartet, and organ trio.
