Display For Don Dinsmore
The University museum has created a display to honor the memory of Donald “Don” Dinsmore, who passed away at the age of 88 on September 17, 2013. Don arrived on the Bluff in June 1972 first as a custodian, and then served as the UP museum curator from 1984 until his second retirement in 2007. As caretaker of the many historical artifacts and photographs in the museum, Don created many historical displays across campus; it only seems fitting that the one who created so many of these historical memories should be honored and remembered in a display just for him. Please stop by the display case on the first floor of Buckley Center across from the Shepard Freshman Resource Center to view photographs and articles of Don through the years. For a narrated video of the display go to: wordpress.up.edu/museum or use a smart phone to scan the QR code in the Buckley Center display case. For more information contact Carolyn Connolly, museum coordinator, at 8038 or piatz@up.edu.
Clark Library Open House
The University will host an open house for the newly opened and renovated Clark Library on Friday, September 27, from 2 to 5 p.m. All faculty, staff, students, and the public are welcome to attend. The open house will feature guided tours on the hour and readings by Brian Doyle, award winning author and editor of Portland Magazine, on the half hour. Light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be provided.
The Clark Library’s renovation and rebuilding project, which cost an estimated $12.5 million, began in May 2012 and concluded when the library was opened to students and faculty in August. The new, modern library was built on the root structure of the old and now offers current technologies, collaborative and flexible learning spaces, and multi-format information resources. For more information contact the Clark Library at 7111 or go to http://library.up.edu.
Rest In Peace, Don Dinsmore
Donald “Don” Dinsmore, who served as curator of the University Museum from its inception in 1984 to 2007, passed away in the morning on Tuesday, September 17, after a long illness. He was 88 years old.
Don started his career on The Bluff as a custodian in 1972, working mostly in the old Science Hall (now Romanaggi Hall), where he cheerfully went about his duties while befriending all and sundry faculty and staff and students who labored there. He was an elementary school teacher and vice principal for many years, a profession he entered after coming home from combat service in World War II, where he saw action in the South Pacific as a landing boat pilot.
The University museum came about as a mutual dream of Don and history professor Jim Covert, and started as a ragtag collection of artifacts piled on folding tables in a storeroom in Shipstad basement. Don spent countless hours collecting, cataloguing, storing, and displaying every item of historic significance to the University he could lay his hands on, and many of those items can be seen in the University museum to this day, still located in the basement of Shipstad across from the archives.
Services will take place on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 10 a.m. at Hustad Funeral Home with interment at 12:30 p.m. at Willamette National Cemetery. Our prayers and condolences to Marian, Don’s widow, and his children, grandchildren, and many friends and admirers. Gifts in Don’s memory can be made to the University museum through Diane Dickey at dickey@up.edu.

Fall Course Reserves
The Clark Library is at full power and ready to tackle fall semester course reserves. To ensure that reserves are available by the start of the semester, please e-mail a list to library@up.edu or drop materials off at the Service Desk as soon as possible. Library staff also handle scanning and copyright permissions, so will need to know the course name, course number, instructor, and number of students enrolled in each course. Questions about reserves can be directed to the Service Desk at 7111 or library@up.edu. The Reserves FAQ is also available at: http://tinyurl.com/ko2zkf5.
RISE Campaign Library Gifts
The development office has announced recent RISE Campaign gifts totaling $118,500 to help renovate the Clark Library, where a dedication ceremony for the general public is set for September 27. The recent library gifts were from Eugene and Janet Wizer, who gave $25,000; Cisco Systems, $19,000; Chris and Kimra Corrado, $15,000; Soderstrom Architects, $22,000; Todd Construction, $10,000; the Rose E. Tucker Charitable Foundation, $10,000; the estate of David Walter, $10,000; and the Jackson Foundation, $7,500. Eugene Wizer graduated from UP in 1960, Chris Corrado in 1982, and David Walter in 1958.
The library renovation and rebuilding project began in May 2012 and is expected to cost an estimated $12.5 million. Designs called for a new, modern library on the basic root structure of the old. The library was closed during the 2012-2013 academic year, and is set to reopen in August 2013. Library services were offered during the interim year.
The renovated library will help facilitate new tools and resources for the University’s students. While maintaining a similar infrastructure, many aspects of the library have changed from the renovation. The new library entrance faces the Academic Quad, and the building will be open for students 24 hours a day.
The reopening of the Clark Library is set for August 12. The library staff is busy moving into the building and adjusting to the new features. The usual online resources are available, as well as interlibrary loan (ILL) service for article requests. For more information contact the library at 7111 or library@up.edu, or go to http://library.up.edu.
A public event celebrating the reopening and dedication of Clark Library is set for 2-5 p.m., on Friday, September 27. The gifts are part of the University’s RISE Campaign, which was announced in December 2010 and seeks to raise $175 million by 2014. The RISE Campaign, which has raised more than $161 million to date, is one of the largest development campaigns ever for a Pacific Northwest private college or university.
