Debate and Speech Union

The University of Portland’s Speech and Debate Union successfully participated in the Orv Iverson & Krista Bacon-Vickery Memorial Forensics Tournament at Clark College in Vancouver, Washington, over the weekend of December 8-9, according to Brian Simmons and Bohn Lattin, communication studies:

  • Anna Murphy (business) won 1st place speaker in the Novice Division of Debate with a Bronze award
  • John Russell (civil engineering) advanced to the elimination rounds of Debate, Silver award
  • Beau Woodward (economics) advanced to the elimination rounds of Debate, Bronze award
  • Arthur Hammer(business) advanced to the elimination rounds of Debate, a Bronze award
  • Katherine Wilson (political science) won 2nd place speaker in the Open Division of Debate and advanced to the elimination rounds, a Bronze
  • award, and won 2nd place in the Open Division of Extemporaneous Speaking
  • Elizabeth Hartley (biology) won 3rd place speaker in the Open Division of Debate
  • Nikki Carter (civil engineering) won 2nd place in Open Division Impromptu Speaking and 3rd in the Open Division of Extemporaneous Speaking.

In addition, the University of Portland team won 3rd place overall in the tournament among participating four-year schools. For more information

Know When To Hold ’Em

The Residence Hall Association (RHA) would like to invite all faculty and staff to consider volunteering at Casino Night on Friday, February 1, according to Jon Merchant, residence life. Faculty and staff are needed to serve as dealers and to assist with craps, roulette, blackjack, and bingo (instruction will be provided). Position Open

The human resources office is recruiting for a new benefits administrator, according to director Bryn Sopko. Carol Welch will be transitioning to the university events office in January. The position is posted on the UP job listings site at https://up.hiretouch.com/. Applications will be accepted through January 7, 2013.

Reduced Hours For Break

The Pilot House bookstore will operate on reduced hours during the week leading up to the University’s Christmas break, according to manager Erin Bright. The bookstore will be open Monday, December 17 to Friday, December 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed on Saturday, December 22. The bookstore will reopen on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at 9 a.m. For more information contact Bright at bright@up.edu.

Christmas Break Schedule

The Christmas season Mass schedule for the Chapel of Christ the Teacher will be as follows, according to Theresa McCreary, campus ministry:

  • Sunday Masses on December 23 and December 30 at 10:30 a.m.
  • No weekday 12:05 p.m. Masses from December 24 to December 31
  • Feast of the Mother of God Mass will be celebrated on January 1 at 10:30 a.m.
  • Daily 12:05 p.m. Masses will resume on Wednesday, January 2.

University Singers On Tour

The University Singers will be touring the Puget Sound region from January 9-13. The group is comprised of student musicians selected by audition from across the University regardless of major and is considered the University’s top concert choir. Performances are free and open to the public and include:

The choir will sing a program of sacred and secular works from the Renaissance to today, including a setting of the Magnificat by Peter Chamberlain, a member of the choir and a junior engineering major. The choir will also be performing private concerts at Olympia High School, John Paul II High School (Lacey), Panorama (a retirement community in Lacey), Shelton High School, Gig Harbor High School and Bishop Blanchet High School (Seattle).

The director of the University Singers is Michael Connolly, performing and fine arts, director of the University’s music program.

From Our Past: January 6, 1937

January 6, 1937 saw the death of Brother André Bessette, C.S.C. (now Saint André Bessette) in Montreal, Canada. Born in 1845, Andre Bessette entered the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1870 and served for many years as doorkeeper of the College de Notre Dame on Mount Royal. He was instrumental in the establishment and building of the Oratory of Saint Joseph, now the largest church in North America. He was known as “the miracle worker of Montreal” and many cures and other favors have been attributed to his prayer and intercession. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1982 and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010. The Church in Canada and the United States now observe the feast of Saint André Bessette on this date.
