Fr. James Heft Lecture Discussion Group, Feb. 21

A faculty discussion group led by Michael Cameron, theology, will meet to discuss two of Fr. James Heft’s articles and their issues on Friday, February 21, from 3:30-5 p.m., in the Murphy Room in Franz Hall. The group discussion will be in preparation for Fr. Heft’s lecture on Thursday, February 27, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center room 163. He will speak on “Bishops and Theologians: A Creative Tension?”  To obtain the two articles (“Spirituality and Religion: Challenges and Opportunities” and “Distinctively Catholic Keeping the Faith in Higher Education”) contact Jamie Powell, Garaventa Center, at 7702 or powell@up.edu. Spring Butine Proposals Due by Feb. 7

FrederkingJan20The Committee on Teaching and Scholarship cordially invites all regular faculty to submit proposals to receive funding from the Arthur Butine Faculty Development Fund. Faculty can download Butine application materials and review selection criteria by visiting https://www.up.edu/academic-senate/tas/. Applications are due to 1) the Chair of the Committee on Teaching and Scholarship, Lauretta Frederking (by e-mail to tas@up.edu); 2) the applications’ respective department chairs (if CAS); and 3) the applicants’ deans no later than noon on Friday, February 7, 2014. Please note also that applicants must discuss their Butine proposals with their respective deans prior to submitting applications for consideration. It is imperative that the proposals must be fully completed, otherwise they will be automatically disqualified from consideration.

Faith & Intellectual Life Discussion Group, Feb. 7

il papaThe next meeting of the Faith and Intellectual Life Discussion Group will be on Friday, February 7, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., in Franz Hall Murphy conference room. The group will be discussing Antonio Spadaro’s “Interview with Pope Francis: A Big Heart Open to God,” and a Rothko image to be announced later. Readings are on electronic reserve in the library under Eifler, Karen or Martin, Norah, Faith and Intellectual Discussion Group. All faculty and staff are welcome. Refreshments will be served. Free Screening: “Walking the Camino,” Jan. 29

el caminoAll faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend a free screening of the documentary “Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago” on Wednesday, January 29, at 7 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons. The screening is open to the public. This multiple award winning film has been selling out screenings around the world. It concerns six strangers as they attempt to walk 500 miles across Spain, using the famous pilgrim path. The movie will be followed by a panel discussion with Kate Regan, international languages and cultures, and director and producer Lydia B. Smith. Emergency Response Training: Are You Ready for a Disaster?

1firstaidkit copyThe University of Portland Campus Community Emergency Response Team (CCERT) offers emergency response training for all faculty, staff, and students, according to Jeff Rook, public safety. Volunteers are trained by the University’s CCERT trainers and Portland Fire and Rescue to provide emergency disaster assistance on campus and in the immediate surrounding neighborhood. Public safety offers CCERT classes at no cost to people who live or work at the University of Portland. Participants attend a total of 24 hours of hands-on training. Classes are on Wednesdays, 4:30-7:30, starting January 29 in Buckley Center room 314. For more information and online registration clink on this link. massonCulligan copyThe Committee on Teaching and Scholarship is accepting faculty nominations for the 2013-2014 Teaching Award and Scholarship awards, according to committee chair Lauretta Frederking. The awards are an opportunity for the University community to celebrate publicly two of its own for outstanding achievements in teaching and scholarship. The committee will accept nominations until noon on Friday, January 31, by e-mail to tas@up.edu. Submission of supporting materials by nominees will be due by noon on Friday, March 21. $85,533 Romanaggi Gift to RISE

5277Romanaggi_web copyThe University has received a RISE Campaign donation of $85,533 from Don Romanaggi, M.D., an alumnus and longtime supporter of the University. His gift benefits student scholarships at the University, upgrades to Don V. Romanaggi M.D. Hall, and enhancements of Joe Etzel Field. Romanaggi graduated from UP in 1956 and then earned his medical degree in 1960 from Loyola University’s Stritch School of Medicine. His medical practice in Portland specialized in treatment of allergy, asthma, and immunology. In 1997, he retired from active practice after 31 years. While practicing medicine, he also was an associate professor of the volunteer teaching faculty at Oregon Health Sciences University.

Romanaggi and his late wife Agnes, a 1959 UP graduate, have been generous to the University over the years. They were the major donors to the Old Science Hall that in November 2010 was renamed Romanaggi Hall. The gift helped fund new windows throughout, renovation of the third floor, roof improvements, and the first thorough cleaning of its masonry in seventy years. The Romanaggis, who were married for almost 50 years, also made an estate planning gift to provide continued maintenance of the building. They are the originators and major contributors to the Rev. John Molter, C.S.C. Endowed Chair in Science. The gift honored the professor from whom he once earned a dollar. Molter had promised a dollar to any student who got an A in his science class, and those were rare dollars indeed. They also established and funded the Romana­ggi Endowed Scholarship in Pre-Med and the Rev. Gregory Lombardo, C.S.C. Scholarship in Religion. After Agnes’ passing in 2008, Romanaggi funded the Agnes M. Romanaggi Environmental Lab in Donald Shiley Hall.

Romanaggi’s gift is part of the RISE Campaign, which was announced in December 2010 and seeks to raise $175 million by 2014. The campaign has raised more than $168 million to date and is one of the largest development campaigns ever for a Pacific Northwest private college or university.
