Beginning Monday, September 21 and each day of Pope Francis’s historic visit to the U.S., the University of Portland will join 42 other institutions across the country by turning to the same page of the Saint John’s Bible Heritage Edition. This simple act is a rich symbol of Christian solidarity as the nation welcomes the Holy Father. The illuminations to be featured are Creation (Genesis), Abraham and Sarah (Genesis), Ten Commandments (Exodus), Peter’s Confession (Matthew), Loaves and Fishes (Mark), Two Cures (Mark) and Pentecost (Acts of the Apostles).
According to the national coordinators of this effort, these illuminations were chosen because they resonate with values the Pope holds dear: hospitality, concern for the poor, sick and marginalized, the dignity of all people, and care for creation. In addition to the illuminated pages, the library will display a reflection for each day, written by members of the St. John’s University School of Theology and Seminary.
The Saint John’s Bible is the first handwritten, illuminated Bible manuscript completed since the invention of the printing press. UP received a Heritage Edition from benefactors Allen and Kathleen Lund in 2013, and it is often included in the prayer and aesthetic life of the University.
