Bringing Eyes of Faith to Film: “Inside Out,” Feb. 17

The next Bringing Eyes of Faith to Film screening will take place on Wednesday, February 17, with a free screening of Disney Pixar’s “Inside Out” at 7:15 p.m. in Romanaggi Hall Room 203. All are welcome to this free event, with movie snacks provided. Garaventa Center co-directors Karen Eifler and Rev. Charlie Gordon, C.S.C., will explore themes of grace, redemption, and transcendence in surprising places.

Marianne Lloyd Talk, “Prayers, Puns, & Practice,” Feb. 9

Seton Hall professor Marianne Lloyd will give a talk entitled “Prayers, Puns, and Practice” on the role of memory in imagination, faith, and humor on Tuesday, February 9 at 7:15 p.m., in Franz Hall Room 120.

Lloyd says she won’t be able to prove that God has a sense of humor, but she hopes to provide evidence that such truth should not come as a surprise. The event is part of the Beckman Humor Project, which celebrates humor as “a creative way to puncture arrogance and outwit violence.”

Lloyd, an associate professor of psychology at Seton Hall, researches memory illusions, teaches statistics and research methods and serves on the Faculty Senate and the Board for the Center for Vocation and Servant Leadership. She was the 2015 recipient of the Collegium Visionary Award for her work to bring the Catholic mission into her teaching and scholarship. Her talk is sponsored by the Garaventa Center.

Celebrate Thirst Friday, February 12

All faculty and staff are invited to the first Thirst Friday of the new year on February 12. Drop by the Garaventa Center (330 Franz) any time between 4 and 6 p.m. to enjoy hearty treats, assorted libations, and most especially, warm conversation with campus neighbors. Blessed Basil Moreau Feast Day, Spirit of Holy Cross Award, Jan. 20

All University of Portland community members are invited to celebrate the feast day of Blessed Basil Moreau, C.S.C., founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross, on Wednesday, January 20, at 5 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. Karen Eifler, co-director of the Garaventa Center, will be honored as a recipient of the 2015 Spirit of Holy Cross Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Congregation upon its lay collaborators.

The award is given annually to lay collaborators of the Congregation of Holy Cross, United States Province of Priests and Brothers, and recognizes lay collaborators who devotedly work to make Blessed Basil Moreau’s vision and mission to “make God known, loved, and served” a reality at the Congregation’s education, parish and mission apostolates. Honorees receive a proclamation of gratitude signed by Provincial Superior Fr. Tom O’Hara on behalf of the entire U.S. Province.

Pacific Northwest Book Award Winner The Estimable Brian Doyle Reading, Jan. 19

Brian Doyle, award-winning essayist, novelist and editor of Portland magazine, will read from several of his new books at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, January 19, in the Pilot House bookstore. Doyle is the author of many books of essays, poems, and fiction, among them the sprawling Oregon novel Mink River and the sea novel The Plover. Doyle’s most recently published books include So Very Much the Best of Us (essays), How the Light Gets In (poems), Reading in Bed (essays), Martin Marten (novel), and A Book of Uncommon Prayer (prayers). The reading is sponsored by the Garaventa Center.

Experience The Divine Through “Visio Divina,” Dec. 9

The Garaventa Center and Campus Ministry invite all members of the UP community to step away from the frenzy of the season for Visio Divina on Wednesday, December 9, during Advent, at 12:45 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. Visio Divina, which means “sacred seeing,” is an ancient form of contemplative prayer centered on sacred images. It is rooted in monastic tradition. Participants will experience the Divine in images from The Saint John’s Bible, a different one each week. Visio Divina asks only for our silent presence; each session lasts about 30 minutes.

“Becoming Human” Interactive Session, Nov. 18

The Garaventa Center will sponsor a community conversation with L’Arche Portland exploring the concept of “Becoming Human,” as introduced by L’Arche founder Jean Vanier, on Wednesday, November 18, 4:30-6 p.m., in Franz Hall Room 120. The event is free and open to all. Refreshments will be served.

L’Arche is an international federation dedicated to the creation and growth of homes, programs, and support networks with people who have intellectual disabilities.
