Annual Red Mass, Sept. 28: All are Invited
All members of the campus community are invited to attend the annual Red Mass on Wednesday, September 28, at 5:30 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. Red is a traditional color associated with the Holy Spirit, and the Red Mass is celebrated each fall to honor and invoke the gifts of the Holy Spirit on all those associated with the practice and administration of law, a custom dating back to the Middle Ages. The first Red Mass in the U.S. was celebrated in 1859.
Archbishop Alexander K. Sample (pictured) will be the principal celebrant and Fr. James Gallagher, C.S.C., Campus Ministry, will offer the homily.
The Red Mass is an ancient tradition in the Catholic Church, going back to medieval times, wherein the Holy Spirit is invoked at the beginning of the legal season to guide all those administer the law. The red vestments worn by the priests symbolize the Holy Spirit who descended on the Apostles in the form of tongues of fire on Pentecost and whose wisdom is implored to guide the Church and the Nation.

New Podcast: Fr. Tom’s “The Sacredness of the Ordinary”
Several people who attended Fr. Tom Hosinski’s final UP lecture, “The Sacredness of the Ordinary” (and many who weren’t able to attend) have asked if it would be available as a podcast. A downloadable podcast of the lecture is now available at this link, along with a transcript.

“The Sacredness of the Ordinary,” with Fr. Tom Hosinski, C.S.C., April 20
All are welcome to join the Garaventa Center in honoring distinguished theologian Fr. Tom Hosinski, C.S.C., as he offers his final lecture before retiring at the end of the spring 2016 semester. His lecture, “The Sacredness of the Ordinary,” is set for Wednesday, April 20, at 7:15 p.m., in Franz Hall Room 120.
The sacred and the ordinary are frequently distinguished and seemingly separated from each other. But reflection on divine omnipresence and on traditional ways of understanding the doctrine of creation and creaturely existence suggests a different view. In this talk, Fr. Hosinski will suggest that the sacred and the ordinary actually coincide and incorporate each other.
Fr. Hosinski has been teaching at the University since 1978. His publications include a book on the philosophy and philosophical theology of Alfred North Whitehead (Stubborn Fact and Creative Advance, 1993), a book on the contemporary understanding of God (tentatively entitled God-Talk in the 21st Century, 2017), and numerous scholarly articles.

The event is co-sponsored by the Garaventa Center and the Dundon-Berchtold Applied Ethics Initiative.
For more information contact the Garaventa Center at 7702 or garaventa@up.edu.
Conversations with Fr. Charlie Lecture Series, April 12
Fr. Charlie Gordon, C.S.C., and Karen Eifler will present “Love and Mercy in the Maelstrom: Images of Family in Modern Cinema” on Tuesday, April 12, at 3 p.m., in Franz Hall Room 120. It would seem that “family” should be a reliable place for finding comfort in tumultuous times, but you’d never suspect that by looking at many of the families in popular movies today. Is there anything positive to glean from the moms, dads, and grandparents on the big screen? Fr. Gordon and Eifler will tackle that question as well as present images and clips from several recent films.
The event includes an award ceremony for winners of the annual Garaventa Center High School Essay Contest.
