The Franz Center is providing free leadership training and development during the 2017-18 academic year for faculty and staff who want to learn more about becoming a Dexheimer Leadership Fellow. There are over 70 faculty and staff from across the University who have been trained as Dexheimer Leadership Fellows, and the Franz Center would like to include 40 additional faculty and staff, who will begin their training next fall. Dexheimer Leadership Fellows serve as instructors and coaches in the Leader Certificate Program and earn a stipend of $2,500 for their teaching or coaching. We are able to include only exempt (salaried) employees in the program at this time. 2017 $100K Competition, April 29
The Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation will present its annual $100K Challenge Venture Competition on Saturday, April 29, in Shiley Hall room 301. This competition provides students with the opportunity to receive feedback on their proposed ventures from within the local entrepreneurial community, win cash awards, and move on to the opportunity to acquire seed funding, as well as legal and other services, that will help advance an entrepreneurial opportunity to the next stage. All faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend and watch student presentations. Additionally, this year adds a new track focused on Invention, allowing students to highlight something they developed through the InventOR Statewide student invention program.
Preliminary rounds start at 9 a.m., lunch is 12:30 to 1:15 p.m., and the finals round is 1 to 3:30 p.m. The Invention round will take from from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. A reception and announcement of winners takes place from 3:30 t0 4 p.m. Prizes include $1,250 for first place (for-profit and non-profit); $750 for second place (for-profit) and $250 for third place (for-profit). Sponsors include LivePlan, Schwabe, Williamson and Wyatt, Klarquist Sparkman LLP, AARP Foundation, Portland Business Journal, and the Oregon Entrepreneurs Network (OEN).

Franz Center Create-A-Thon, Feb. 25
The Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation will present a Create-A-Thon in conjunction with the Shiley School’s Engineering Week, February 20-24. This event is open to all UP students on Saturday, February 25, in Franz Hall room 120, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. According to Franz Center director Peter Rachor, the Create-A-Thon offers the chance for an individual or team to ideate and develop a basic prototype for a product, service, or venture. Prizes will be awarded in 5 categories, and the event will mark the start of UP’s participation in Invent Oregon, a Statewide program for student inventors.

Bauccio Lecture Series Keynote: “Beyond Political Correctness,” Feb. 2
The Franz Center invites University community members to the Bauccio Lectures Series Keynote, “Beyond ‘Political Correctness’: Success and Everyday Leadership” by Neal Lester on Thursday, February 2, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons. Lester is currently a foundation professor of English with specializations in African American literature and cultural studies, and is also the founding director of Project Humanities for Arizona State University. He speaks nationally and internationally on issues concerning inclusion, diversity, and race. He has published many scholarly works and has been recognized for his work by the Dali Lama. Becoming Human: A Community Conversation, Nov. 15
All University community members are invited to join in a community discussion exploring the concept of “Becoming Human” as introduced by Jean Vanier, the founder of L’Arche, and the challenges and opportunities it presents us in our lives, on Tuesday, November 15, from 4:30-6 p.m., in the Chiles Center Hall of Fame Room. 2016 Bauccio Lecture with Dan Wieden: Nov. 16
The University welcomes Dan Wieden, co-founder and chairman of Wieden+Kennedy, when he delivers the 2016 Bauccio Lecture in Entrepreneurship on Wednesday, November 16, at 7 p.m., in Bauccio Commons. The lecture is free and open to faculty, staff, students, and the public. Wieden will present “I’m Here to Make You Fail.”
The Bauccio Lecture Series is made possible through the generous support of alumnus and entrepreneur Fedele Bauccio ’64, ’66, MBA. As CEO and cofounder of Bon Appetit Management Company, Bauccio’s leadership and vision have brought sweeping and positive changes to the entire spectrum of the food service industry. UP student Michael Williamson awarded runner up in University Start-Up World Cup
Michael Williamson, a senior Finance major, was awarded runner up in his category for his venture Sentri Performance at the finals of the University Start-Up World Cup, held Friday, October 7 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Sentri makes a line of lightweight high performance outdoor wear styled as a ‘hoodie’ specially designed by Williamson, and incorporating technical fabric and features.
The 4-day event featured 50 teams from more than 30 countries. Williamson was one of two students representing the USA at the University Start Up World Cup, with the other student being from Stanford University.
Williamson was also the winner of UP’s 2016 $100K Venture Competition last April.

Operations & Tech Management Symposium, Oct. 20
