Spring 2023 Provost’s Initiative for Undergraduate Research (Apply by Nov. 1)
Since its inauguration in 2015, the Provost’s Initiative for Undergraduate Research has provided support for faculty members from across the University who collaborate with undergraduates on a semester-long research project. The provost’s office is committed to increasing opportunities for student experiential learning, and this initiative represents a key element in achieving that goal.
Faculty members are invited to apply for a Provost’s Initiative grant for support to collaborate with an undergraduate on a co-designed research project during the spring semester 2023. Students are expected to meet and work with the faculty member weekly. Students will enroll in a 493 course and will earn a minimum of 1 credit for their work on the project and produce a deliverable (research paper, lit review, or presentation, etc.) appropriate to the discipline. (Note: 1 credit hour typically requires 45 hours of work on the project, which includes faculty meeting time.) Faculty members who are new to undergraduate research at University of Portland will receive $1,500 for mentoring the student in research, while experienced faculty members will be compensated $1,000.
Applications are available here and are due November 1, 2022. Email ur@up.edu with questions or call Cara Hersh, assistant provost, at x7262.

About If I Go Will They Miss Me
On January 14, 2020, Delta airlines dumped roughly 15,000 gallons of jet fuel on an area of Los Angeles that included neighborhoods and schools. Walter Thompson-Hernández grew up in one of those communities. The incident and his childhood dreams about flight inspired this 12-minute film.
Walter Thompson-Hernández, a UP alum from the Class of 2009, is a former New York Times journalist and podcast host of California Love. He’s the author of The Compton Cowboys: The New Generation of Cowboys in America’s Urban Heartland, which is being adapted into a film for Fox Searchlight. He wrote and directed If I Go Will They Miss Me.
Virtual Thesis Defense: Valerie Maria Isabella Rathmann (Sept. 9)
The Department of Communication Studies invites all faculty and staff to attend Valerie Maria Isabella Rathmann’s virtual thesis defense on Friday, September 9, from 9 a.m.–11 a.m. via Zoom. Valerie’s thesis, “What is Wrong with You?”: Culturally-Shaped Interpretations of Professional Identity in International Organizations is a qualitative study of professionals working in international organizations. Her study found that for participants in international organizations, a “professional identity” serves as an ideological belief system performed through different communication practices. The study contributes to research by demonstrating how professional identity is more than simply the acquisition of traits, values, or competencies, but is a socially constructed sense of self. This study illustrates how participants construct this sense of self by identifying primarily with their national culture creating tensions in international organizations. These moments of tension emerge when different, symbolic understandings of professional identity clash together and are made visible through discourse.
If you would like to attend this thesis defense, please contact Natalie Nelson-Marsh at nelsonma@up.edu for a Zoom invite.
